Extremely OK Games has announced the cancelation of its hotly anticipated title, Earthblade. The Celeste studio first announced the game back in 2021, but several years, delays, and in-house issues later, it has made the sad decision to pull the plug on the project before it could see the light of day. Fans who were looking forward to Earthblade will have to wait and see what comes next for Extremely OK.

The team at Extremely OK had originally planned to finish work on Earthblade by the end of 2022, with eyes on a 2023 launch date. Over the course of the game's development, its creators let fans know about ongoing issues within the studio about their workload and technical roadblocks, but people largely responded positively to the news. Unfortunately, the problems have ultimately resulted in the game's cancelation.

Extremely OK Games announced it was canceling Earthblade in a January 22 blog post on its website. Creator Maddy Thorson explained that the studio had made the difficult decision in December 2024 but felt it was better to wait until the new year to announce it to the public. The cancelation stems in part from disagreement among the team over the IP rights for Celeste, and while everyone involved eventually resolved the conflict, it ended in one founding member of Extremely OK leaving the studio. This was not the only factor — the devs had delayed Earthblade beyond 2024 before the fracture in the team, suggesting there were already problems in development — but the split may have been the final nail in the coffin.

Extremely OK Games Cancels Earthblade But Will Release Other Projects in the Future

Thorson details that losing a core member of the team led the studio to reflect on Earthblade's development and question if it was worth the toll it was taking on everyone. Ultimately, Extremely OK decided that it had been too much of a struggle and progress had been too slow to justify continuing to work on it. This is not the end of Extremely OK Games. Thorson ended the blog by saying the company would focus on "smaller-scale projects" and try to approach new titles the way it did with Celeste and Towerfall.

It will likely take time for news of any future projects to come out, as Extremely OK is starting with a fresh slate after canceling Earthblade. It's not the first cancelation fans have had to accept recently, either. Reflector canceled its franchise plans after the first entry, Unkown 9: Awakening, underperformed.
