In Chained Echoes, Ghosts are eternal-type creatures first introduced during the “Crossing Mountains” quest. They use magic attacks to drain players’ HP and adapt to counterattacks quickly. But as a JRPG with a unique turned-based combat, Chained Echoes has a tricky way of beating Ghosts. It’s a chess-inspired move that might confuse beginners. So, let this quick guide simplify the strategy.
How to Beat Ghosts in the Purple Flame Temple?
To beat Ghosts, initiate the battle with a magic skill. This way, the Ghosts will activate a Magical-Counter: Magical-Resist, which weakens them against physical attacks. (Lenne’s Fire Thrust is the best starter for killing Ghosts.)
Most players fail to beat Ghosts because they start the fight with physical moves. However, players must note that their primary attack determines a Ghost’s resistant type. In other words, an initial physical skill toughens them against close-range weapon strikes. That’s a particularly bad move because nearly all characters in Chained Echoes are melee-reliant.
The Best Moves to Beat Ghosts
A combination of Glenn’s Power Swing, Kylian’s Wide Swing, and Sienna’s Yoko Giri is the best move. But generally, attacks with physical damage are the best options for beating Ghosts. Players must consider a Ghost’s resistant type before picking the best attack, though. If it has a Physical-Counter, the second-best skills are Lenne’s Fire Thrust and Victor’s Earth Drum.
How The Ghosts’ Resistance Mechanic Works
Chained Echoes’ Ghosts are adaptable, meaning they change their resistance type. Players’ first attack (physical or magical) triggers them to decide which buff to equip. If, for example, they get attacked with magic, they immediately become magic resistant. But if players attack them with a non-magical weapon, they turn into physical-resistant creatures.
Here’s what to remember about Ghosts’ battle mechanics:
- Ghosts change their resistance type once per battle, which happens right at the beginning. (They never re-counter.)
- Once resistant to an attack, even Ultra Moves won’t damage Ghosts.
- Each Ghost’s HP is about 550. And it often takes 7 to 8 turns to kill one.
- Beginner Chained Echoes players are better off without fighting physical-resistant Ghosts as it is resource-draining.
Despite their lovely-looking pixel-art designs, Ghosts can be tough enemies. But to sum things up, players can easily get rid of them with a false attack. All they must do is begin the fight with their weakest ability—whether physical or magical—and save the best skills in the inventory for later.
Chained Echoes is available now for Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, and PC.
