Chainsaw Man is one of the hottest series out there right now, with many viewers and readers being charmed by the downtrodden Denji and the elaborate world he lives in. Tatsuki Fujimoto's series (recently turned into both an anime series and a sequel movie) is an explosive comedy horror with well-written characters, intricate lore, and just downright cool set pieces. While it's easy to get lost in the over-the-top comedy and gore of the series, some moments genuinely ground the characters.
Chainsaw Man: 8 Most Shocking Reveals
Fujimoto is a master of shocks and these are the best ones that hes conjured in Chainsaw Man.
Part of what makes Chainsaw Man so appealing is the attention to detail in the lore, as well as some really intense emotional moments. The story doesn't just depict themes like poverty, manipulation, and trauma but also portrays the impact of these issues with surprising realism. There are plenty of reasons why this show is one of the most popular out there right now. With so much hype around the anime series and subsequent movie, fans are keen to get their hands on as much information as possible about the devils and devil hunters that roam the world of Chainsaw Man.
Tatsuki Fujimoto appears to focus more on the story, characters, and their emotional backgrounds. As such, there is very little 'official' information available about the characters' ages, birthdays, and heights, as anime fans may be used to. Many of these entries are estimates based on character scaling and concept art, so approximated information will be marked with an approximate symbol (≈).
Warning: major spoilers for the Chainsaw Man manga ahead. That said, only characters introduced in the anime will be listed for now.

Denji
A Man Down On His Luck Who Becomes The Chainsaw Devil
- Age: 16–17
- Height: ≈ 6'0" (183cm)
- Birthday: September 12
- Japanese Voice Actor: Kikunosuke Toya
- English Voice Actor: Ryan Colt Levy
Chainsaw Man's protagonist, Denji, starts the series as a teenager living in poverty. He sells important organs, eats cigarettes, and hunts devils with his chainsaw dog, Pochita, to pay off the debt he inherited from his father. That is, until Pochita merges with him at the moment of his death to help him achieve his dreams of having a normal life.
From that point, he becomes the titular 'Chainsaw Man' and is quickly hired by the Public Safety Bureau. Manga readers will be familiar with Denji's birthday, as a pivotal scene happens on this day at the end of part one. Denji is arguably the element that really sets Chainsaw Man apart from other shonen stories, as the protagonist is wildly different from the likes of Luffy and Naruto. Don't get me wrong, those characters are legendary, but Denji is arguably more relatable. His goals are fairly mundane, and he is not driven by a desire for justice or anything noble. He simply wants to experience the joys in life that were always beyond his means.
Pochita
Denji's Lovable Pooch Who Fuses With His Master To Save His Life
- Age: N/A
- Height: ≈ 1'6" (50cm)
- Birthday: December 2
- Japanese Voice Actor: Shiori Izawa
- English Voice Actor: Lindsay Seidel
Pochita takes the form of a cute little dog until he merges with Denji, after which the viewers don't really get to see much of him! Despite this, he's a pivotal part of Chainsaw Man. Because of the care and love Denji showed him as a dog, he chooses to merge with Denji at the moment of his death, creating a contract that will allow Denji to fulfill his dream of having a normal life.
In his dog form, he's a small/medium pooch light enough to be wielded as a chainsaw. Pochita is basically Chainsaw Man's mascot, although he has quite a lot of personality. He is committed to Denji, and he seems to be one of the few Devils who is not solely looking to take advantage of their human contracts.
Makima
The Control Devil Who Manipulates The People Around Her
- Age: N/A
- Height: 5'6" (173cm)
- Birthday: January 7
- Japanese Voice Actor: Tomori Kusunoki
- English Voice Actor: Suzie Yeung
Makima is a fascinating character with a dubious nature. As a professional devil hunter, she's the one who recruits Denji to the Public Safety Bureau, promising to change his destitute life. Fans of the anime will only have questions about her motives, as she comes across as very manipulative and blunt.
A hybrid with the Control Devil, Makima is, somehow, one of the most terrifying beings in Chainsaw Man, and that includes the manga. She quickly sizes up Denji's weaknesses and uses them to her advantage, playing him like a fiddle and treating him as nothing more than a tool and a toy. She is arguably the show's most iconic character.
Power
A Devil Who Forms A Bond With A Cat And Slowly Warms Up To Other Humans
- Age: N/A
- Height: ≈ 5'6" (173cm)
- Birthday: January 29
- Japanese Voice Actor: Fairouz Ai
- English Voice Actor: Sarah Wiedenheft
Power is another devil working for the Public Safety Bureau as a devil hunter. A fan-favorite, Power is greedy, self-motivated, and altogether childish. That being said, she's an incredibly powerful devil who enjoys the thrill of a fight and showing off her skills. Why is she a fan favorite? Well, all of these traits make her extremely fun to watch.
While she is extremely selfish, she has a lot of compassion for her pet cat 'Meowy.' Initially rescuing the cat to fatten up and eat, she became fond of the animal and considers her a lifelong companion. After this, she appears to open up more to humans. She clearly considers Aki and Denji to be close friends and demonstrates this by literally dying for Denji at the end of part one.
Aki Hayakawa
A Fascinating Character With A Stoic Personality And A Tragic Backstory
- Age: 19-20
- Height: 6'2" (190cm)
- Birthday: November 11
- Japanese Voice Actor: Shogo Sakata
- English Voice Actor: Reagan Murdock
Aki is introduced as someone who doesn't particularly like Denji, and while it's true that their personalities clash, they end up becoming close friends. Quiet and stoic, Aki takes on the role of caretaker for both Denji and Power by letting them move into his apartment on Makima's orders.
Fans love Aki's strong and silent personality, and the glimpses into his personal life shown by the Manga and anime are fascinating. He also ranked number one in the second popularity poll held, taking the top spot over the protagonist himself.
Himeno
Shares A Unique Bond With Aki And Is Central To One Of The Most Gross-Out Moments In The Series
- Age: N/A
- Height: 5'9" (175 cm)
- Birthday: May 11
- Japanese Voice Actor: Mariya Ise
- English Voice Actor: Katelyn Barr
Himeno's appearance in the series makes for one of Chainsaw Man's most memorable moments. From the very first moment she makes her presence known on-screen, fans know they're in for a wild ride.
Chainsaw Man's Women Are Terrible, But In a Good Way
The female characters in Chainsaw Man aren't very concerned with being likable, making for a much more interesting experience.
The wildest moment comes when she kisses Denji only to puke in his mouth, followed by an intimate scene that leads to a unique friendship with the protagonist. Unfortunately, her contract with the Ghost Devil leads to an emotional moment where she sacrifices her very being to stop Aki from shortening his lifespan.
Kobeni Higashiyama
A Cowardly Devil Hunter Who Can Be A Bit Too Irritating At Times
- Age: 20
- Height: 5'1" (155 cm)
- Birthday: August 23
- Japanese Voice Actor: Karin Takahashi
- English Voice Actor: Bryn Apprill
There are many beloved characters in Chainsaw Man, but one character that fans universally hate is Kobeni. She's a coward who can't stop moaning and complaining no matter what she faces, which can make it hard to like her character.
Still, her unknown power makes her pretty interesting, even if she hasn't shown her strength in the series. Hopefully, she can redeem her character instead of constantly crying in the face of adversity, time and time again.
Hirokazu Arai
A New Devil Hunter With A Strong Sense Of Duty And Morals
- Age: 22
- Height: 5'10" (178 cm)
- Birthday: Unknown
- Japanese Voice Actor: Taku Yashiro
- English Voice Actor: Jarrod Greene
Arai is one of the newer Devil Hunters in Makima's team who's instantly jealous of Denji's closeness to a person he admires. His strong sense of duty can make him a bit too straight-laced for fans to like, but there's more to this character than what meets the eye.
His nightmarish contract with the Fox Devil allowed him to take the help of this creature by feeding bits and pieces of his body. It's a pretty harrowing contract that is par for the course of what Chainsaw Man is all about.
Reze
Causes An Explosion In Denji's Heart
- Age: Unknown (Seems to be around Denji's age)
- Height: Unknown
- Birthday: Unknown
- Japanese Voice Actor: Reina Ueda
- English Voice Actor: Alexis Tipton
As the eponymous character of Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc, Reze shows up with her eyes set on Denji and, naturally, his Chainsaw Devil ability. A sweet girl who seems to be genuinely interested in the extremely naive protagonist, Reze works fantastically as a counter to Makima, who treats Denji as little more than a plaything to pass the time and, otherwise, as a weapon.
In the grand scheme of things, Reze is a relatively minor character who has a fairly short part to play in Denji's story, but she is still an important figure. Ulterior motives aside, her "fling" with Denji is the first time the latter has experienced something akin to a normal relationship. Denji lived without many crucial formative experiences, barely functioning as a human before he fused with Pochita, let alone at this point.
Katana Man
Driven By One Goal (To Kill Denji)
- Age: Unknown (Seems to be older than most of the other characters. Maybe 30s.)
- Height: 6'5" (195 cm)
- Birthday: Unknown
- Japanese Voice Actor: Daiki Hamano
- English Voice Actor: Jason Marnocha
While ultimately a small part of the manga, Katana Man is one of Chainsaw Man's most iconic villains, largely due to being among the first to really challenge the protagonist. He is also Denji's mirror in some ways, as both of them are humans who merged with Devils and became hybrids with fairly similar designs. Although not exactly the brightest bulb, Katana Man is extremely dangerous, and his one-track mind pushes him to not deviate from his goal to kill Denji. Why is that his focus? Well, Denji killed his grandfather.
Chainsaw Man has a fantastic core cast of characters that serve as the story's foundation, and they are supported by a rotating cast of monstrosities who are absolutely incredible. The anime has only scratched the surface of what the manga holds in terms of Fiends, and sequel seasons should introduce the world to the manga's strongest Devils.
