Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc is an animated masterpiece that has quickly become a critical and commercial success around the entire world. Additionally, and as an adaptation of Chainsaw Man’s fifth canon story arc, it also introduced many new characters to this bizarre series, all with their own unique characteristics, powers and abilities.
Even the existing characters that made their debut back in Season 1 – like Denji, Aki, or Power – got significant power-ups during this story arc. From the titular Bomb Devil to the main character of the show, The Reze Arc is filled to the brim with many powerful fighters, and the following eight are the absolute strongest ones in the movie (who are also, by extension, some of the strongest characters in the entire series).
Power – The Blood Fiend
She Got A Massive Power-Up And Then Disappeared For Most Of The Movie
- Debut: Chapter 4 (Manga) Episode 2 (Anime)
- Voiced by: Fairouz Ai (Japanese) Sarah Wiedenheft (English)
As the Blood Fiend (which means she’s the Blood Devil possessing a human body), Power is a naturally strong character who can use her own blood to make solid constructs, like weapons or other objects. However, since she drank a lot of zombie blood during the final arc of Season 1, she got an impressive power-up that was revealed in the very first scene of The Reze Arc movie.
Power’s horns had grown significantly, and she was strong enough to send Denji flying to the ceiling with a single punch. Despite her newfound strength, she is sadly absent for most of the film, as she was taken away by Makima so she could drain her surplus of blood in order to prevent her from becoming more powerful and more arrogant than she already is (although the post-credits scene revealed that she maintained her eccentric personality).
Beam – The Shark Fiend
Lord Chainsaw’s Loyal Follower Is The MVP Of The Movie
- Debut: Chapter 34 (Manga) Episode 11 (Anime)
- Voiced by: Natsuki Hanae (Japanese) Derick Snow (English)
Power’s absence ended up being a blessing in disguise, because she was temporarily replaced by Beam, the Shark Fiend and a loyal follower of “Lord Chainsaw”, who ended up saving Denji multiple times throughout the movie and proved to be a key ally during the final battle against Reze.
As the Shark Devil, Beam can swim through solid objects as if they were water, which he does in order to hide whenever Denji is out in the open. On top of that, by shifting to his full Devil Form, he can take the appearance of a massive Shark monster that can run surprisingly quickly with his little legs and chomp down on opponents with his jaws. Sadly, Beam was no match for the Bomb Devil, but he did become Chainsaw Man’s steed during the final battle and helped him defeat the Typhoon Devil.
Aki Hayakawa – Special Division Hunter
A Regular Human Who Can Keep Up With All The Devils, Hybrids, And Fiends
- Debut: Chapter 3 (Manga) Episode 2 (Anime)
- Voiced by: Shogo Sakata (Japanese) Reagan Murdock (English)
Aki Hayakawa is one of the most remarkable Chainsaw Man characters, because he’s a regular human being and a Public Safety Devil Hunter living in ca chaotic world full of Devils, Hybrids and Fiends. He’s obviously quite agile and physically strong from the get-go, especially when compared to his former coworkers from the Second Division, but he has also made multiple contracts with Devils that allow him to keep up with Reze and the Typhoon Devil during the climax of the movie.
Aki’s contract with the Future Devil allows him to see glimpses of the near future so he can avoid their outcome, which proved to be a key asset in his solo fight against the Bomb Devil. Additionally, he is a talented sword fighter who wields a sword made with the powers of the Angel Devil throughout the entire film, and he can use it to deal massive damage to devils. The fact that Aki came out of the explosive conflict against the Bomb Devil pretty much unscathed is a testament of how strong and skilled he truly is.
Angel – The Angel Devil
Aki’s New Partner Has A Terrifying Ability
- Debut: Chapter 34 (Manga) Episode 11 (Anime)
- Voiced by: Maaya Uchida (Japanese) Casey Mongillo (English)
It’s important to clarify that, unlike other prominent characters in this film, Angel is not a Fiend, but the real Angel Devil, who happens to have a humanlike appearance because he embodies the concept of angels. Makima herself claims Angel is one of the strongest hunters in the Special Division (second only to Kishibe) which is why she partners him with Aki at the beginning of the film.
As the Angel Devil, he can fly, absorb human lifespans and, most terrifying of all, turn said lifespans into powerful weapons with special properties, like swords or spears. Not only does Aki wield one of Angel’s katanas throughout the movie, but he himself also uses this ability to defeat Reze with a rain of spears in the final scene (although he was only able to do so thanks to Makima’s intervention).
Typhoon Devil
The Embodiment Of Typhoons And Reze’s Only Ally
- Debut: Chapter 41 (Manga) Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc (Anime)
- Voiced by: Eri Kitamura (Japanese) Reshel Mae (English)
One of the few new characters who made their debut during The Reze Arc movie is the one and only Typhoon Devil, a gigantic monster who can create storms and manipulate both wind and water, due to the fact that they are the embodiment of the concept of typhoons in general.
The Typhoon Devil makes an alliance with Reze after she kills their previous partner, and stays hidden for most of the film, until they finally show their true form during the final battle in order to even the playing field for the Bomb Devil. As expected from the embodiment of typhoons, this devil is enormous, and can destroy entire city blocks with their powers, to the point that they came really close to killing more than one important character, like Aki and Angel. At the end of the day, it took the combined efforts of both Denji and Beam to take down this dangerous behemoth.
Reze – The Bomb Devil Hybrid
The Main Antagonist Of The Film Is An Explosive Combatant
- Debut: Chapter 40 (Manga) Episode 12 (Anime)
- Voiced by: Reina Ueda (Japanese) Alexis Tipton (English)
This movie is literally titled Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc, so it shouldn’t be much of a surprise to learn that its titular character, Reze, is also one of the most powerful ones. After successfully tricking Denji into falling in love with her, she finally reveals her true identity in the middle of the film: she’s the Bomb Devil hybrid, and she wants to capture the Chainsaw Devil’s heart.
Reze is a Soviet spy who was trained her entire life to fulfill dangerous missions, so she’s naturally deceitful, intelligent, agile and physically strong (as can be seen when she strangles "Mohawk Man" to death), but her most valuable and most dangerous asset is obviously her Bomb Devil transformation. She can create a variety of destructive explosives from scratch - like bombs, grenades and even homing missiles – which she uses to defeat and kill multiple Devil Hunters throughout the movie’s final arc. Additionally, and like all the other Hybrids in the series, she’s incredibly durable and can regenerate entire body parts by consuming blood. The Bomb Devil has one major weakness, however, and is the fact that she can’t detonate her bombs if she’s wet, which Denji takes advantage of to finally defeat her.
Denji – The Chainsaw Devil Hybrid
The Main Character Has No Idea Of How Powerful He Actually Is
- Debut: Chapter 1 (Manga) Episode 1 (Anime)
- Voiced by: Kikunosuke Toya (Japanese) Ryan Colt Levy (English)
Denji is the main character of Chainsaw Man and, by extension, the main character of this movie. He made a contract with Pochita, the Chainsaw Devil, in the very first episode, which turned him into its designated Hybrid, meaning that he can summon chainsaws from his hands, feet and head by pulling the cord in his chest. But the thing with Denji is that he has no idea how powerful the Chainsaw Devil truly is, and most characters who are aware of it are keeping this information hidden from him.
He does get blindsided by Reze’s affection, which is why she’s able to quickly dispose of him in the middle of the movie. But after regaining his composure and drinking more blood to heal himself, Denji is able to face his toxic love interest in a bombastic final battle. Beam reveals to him that the Chainsaw Devil can use his chains to move around the battlefield, but Denji decides to use them to turn the Shark Devil into his mount instead, and they kill the Typhoon Devil together. On top of that, he did end up using his chains and whips to entangle Reze and throw her into the water to nullify her powers, which was a surprisingly brilliant moment for a character who often acts dumb and reckless.
Makima - Head Of Tokyo Special Division 4
Denji And Reze Are Nowhere Near Her Power Level
- Debut: Chapter 1 (Manga) Episode 1 (Anime)
- Voiced by: Tomori Kusunoki (Japanese) Suzie Yeung (English)
Makima is absent for most of the film’s duration, but when she finally reappears at the very end, it immediately becomes evident that she’s the most powerful character and that nobody else (not even Reze) can match her in terms of strength and power. Neither Denji nor anime-only fans are supposed to know why and how she’s so powerful yet, but the fact that she was able to catch Reze by surprise and defeat her so effortlessly was incredibly impressive.
This makes a lot of sense, however, considering that she’s the head of Tokyo Special Division 4, not to mention that some fans may recall how she used her mysterious powers to crush a bunch of Yakuza members from a distance back in Season 1. If Chainsaw Man receives a second season in the near future, anime viewers will soon discover why Makima is so strong and so dangerous.
