Summary

  • Death Devil orchestrated events to prevent Nostradamus prophecy; true intentions remain elusive.
  • Death Devil revealed to be Famine Devil, alias "Fami," raising questions about motives.
  • Devils struggle with identity recall; relationships and alliances remain complex.

The Death Devil has been a topic of concern since the introduction of the Prophecy of Nostradamus. With great terror descending upon Earth and resulting in human extinction, both humans and Devils wish to prevent this catastrophic event from occurring.

The Death Devil was thought to be revealed in Chapter 195 of Chainsaw Man, thus thrusting the characters into equally catastrophic situations. However, the real Death Devil had been living under an alias, orchestrating multiple schemes right before our noses, making all of her prior motives now questionable.

The Death Devil Finally Made Her Appearance

A Shocking New Revelation

The imminent arrival of the Death Devil, a pivotal member of the Four Horsemen, had been a force yet unknown. In Chapter 195, it was believed the Death Devil had finally appeared with her uniquely shaped eyes, indicating her apparent reincarnation. The Death Devils' ascent unto Earth was said to bring forth the end of humanity, that which the Public Safety Comission were attempting to prevent.

As of Chapter 195, it was believed the newest transfer student who had just arrived had suspected the Death Devil as she possessed the same unique eyes as the other Four Horsemen. However, her words were confusing at most. Since she was alleged to be the Death Devil, it was strange to see her stating that she’d appeared to “save” the students. However, like many of the other Horsemen, it was possible this could have been attributed to an eccentric personality trait. This is also supported by her insistent and constant weeping at the thought of the students suffering.

As many of the other Horsemen also displayed dominant traits, the supposed “Death Devil” declined to assist the student in throwing away the trash as it was a waste of her “superior talents” and her mentions of saving humans through death, it was all thought that the newest Fourth Horseman was confirmed to be the Death Devil. However, this is far from the case as she reveals her true identity.

Chainsaw Man: The Reze Arc, Explained

The Chainsaw Man: Reze movie will cover the short Bomb Girl arc, in which Denji almost gets a girlfriend.

During the encounter with the fake Chainsaw Man, the “Death Devil” reveals herself to actually be the Famine Devil, whose preferred name is Fami. This was a shocking revelation, as the Famine Devil had supposedly already been revealed in Chapter 113. This illustrates that although the Four Horsemen can identify each other, they cannot determine which sister is which. Nayuta's interaction with Yoru and the so-called “Famine Devil” further supports this.

I’m War Devil's big sister… Famine Devil. Call me Fami.

During these interactions, although Nayuta could recognize a scent from her sisters, it’s likely she could not identify which was which, as she referred to the “Famine Devil” as “Sis” instead of by name. This chapter also indicates she still did not know who Asa really was, as she referred to her as "that girl." In Chapter 198, it is revealed that “Fami” is actually the Death Devil and has been using her name as an alias all along. This revelation raises multiple questions about the true motives of the Death Devil.

As mentioned above, the Death Devil is responsible for the forthcoming Nostradamus Prophecy. In this prophecy, during the seventh month of the year 1999, “a great King of Terror will descend,” thus bringing about the end of humanity. In Chapter 131, the Death Devil, “Fami” at the time, states that the Nostradamus prophecy is coming true; she also mentions that she does not want this prophecy to come true because all her favorite food items will no longer exist.

Chainsaw Man: How Denji's Loneliness Came to an End

Denji has faced a string of unfortunate events, yet he stays hopeful. Nonetheless, when Yoru confesses, his loneliness comes to an end.

At the time, her excuse seemed believable as she had consistently demonstrated her love for food by ordering numerous items to satisfy her hunger. Now that her cover has been revealed, what are her true intentions? When the Death Devil first encounters Yoshida, she states that the initial revelation of the prophecy will be marked by the emergence of a primal fear, known as the Falling Devil. Shortly thereafter, the Death Devil is seen giving commands to the Falling Devil, instructing her to starve Yoru in an effort to exert control over her. Initially, this was disregarded since Death had her own reasons for manipulating Yoru to avert the prophecy; however, with Death taking charge of the Falling Devil in Chapter 131, this could indicate the first hint of her actual identity.

The Devils are well-known for their poor memory when it comes to names and faces, which is particularly evident in Makima’s situation. This could stem from their continual cycle of reincarnation between Earth and Hell, which results in the loss of all memories from previous lives upon death. If this theory holds, it might explain why Devils can partially recognize each other by scent. However, scent alone is insufficient for accurate identification, as demonstrated by Nayuta and Yoru, who failed to recognize Death in her true form.

  • The Death Devil was responsible for the Eternity Devil trapping Asa and Denji, placing them in this predicament to force Asa to turn Denji into a weapon.
  • Death is also responsible for the Falling Devil’s appearance on Earth, demonstrating her seniority and attempting to enslave Yoru. Thus kickstarting the beginning of the prophecy.
  • Death also orchestrated the entire Chainsaw Man Church plan. However, the goal is to protect humanity, though she seems to hide her true intentions.

Throughout the series, as we get to know the Death Devil, who initially presented herself as Fami, she has yet to display much emotion and generally maintains an exceptionally mysterious demeanor along with a mature personality. Previously, the Death Devil orchestrated many events within the Academy Saga, including the Falling Devil, and was the mastermind behind the Chainsaw Man Church.

I disposed of all my organs. But I still couldn’t die.

The church sought to eradicate the Death Devil during the Chainsaw Man Church arc. Yet, with the Death Devil being the mastermind behind it all, her true intentions remain elusive. The Chainsaw Man Church might have been a strategy to incite further death and chaos; however, Nayuta points out that as more people develop a fear of Chainsaws and War, this will ultimately boost their strength.

Is the Death Devil aiming to annihilate humanity, or is she trying to empower Denji and Yoru? In Chapter 198, Fami pleads with Death to die if she has any compassion for humanity. However, Death subsequently reveals her body, visibly cut open and lacking internal organs, showcasing her immortality. This seems to illustrate to Fami that even if Death wished to die, she may be unable to achieve a physical demise, as she embodies Death itself.
