The Public Safety Commission has a slew of Devils that can be used at their disposal, although at a price. Who is the Aging Devil?
A Primal Fear With No Regard For Life
The Aging Devil is known as a Primal Fear in Chainsaw Man. Due to their long history, Primal Fears are immensely powerful devils. As humans have always feared aging and growing old, this would make the Aging Devil ancient and all-powerful. The Aging Devil is one of several Primal Fears, including the Falling Devil and Darkness Devil.
The Aging Devil resides in Hell, as its humanoid body sits on top of a throne of human body parts and two humans as chair legs. It would also seem that the Aging Devil has an amicable relationship with the Public Safety Devil Hunters. In Chapter 173, Chainsaw Man eats the Ear Devil to reinstate the concept of Ears, and the Public Safety must force the Chainsaw Man to throw up the Ear Devil.
Chainsaw Man: The Real Reason The War Devil Wants To Kill Chainsaw Man
The War Devil wants to save her comrades from the Chainsaw Man. However, she has another reason for wanting to defeat him.
Due to the Aging Devil's amicable relationship with the Public Safety, three members of the Public Safety Commission must cut off their index finger to give the Aging Devil orders or request assistance from the Devil. With the severed finger, they must write the word “Hit” on a mirror while announcing the names of several body parts. The Aging Devil will then manifest a mirror to attack the Chainsaw Man.
In Chapter 173, it would also seem that the Aging Devil is lazy or annoyed at having to fulfill the request. This may be due to the concept of the Devil, as it is the Aging Devil; it may dislike having to do anything aside from sitting on its throne. In Chapter 174, Fumiko Mifune from Special Division 7 also notes that the Aging Devil has no attachments to life, but this may be due to being a Primal Fear as these Devils have never experienced death.
What Contract Does the Aging Devil Have with The Public Safety Commission?
A Greedy Contract Only Favorable to The Old and Aging
In Chapter 174, we are shown a meeting with several important figures in the Japanese government. These include the Prime Minster of Japan, the Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications, the Minister of Defense, the Chief Cabinet Secretary, the Public Safety Devil Hunters, the Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry, and the Former Minister of Finance.
The Public Safety likely wanted to confirm whether the Chainsaw Man has the powers of erasure and restoration when eating Devils. As mentioned above, the Chainsaw Man ate the Ear Devil, and the Aging Devil and Yoshida restored the Devil and Ears into existence. With this newfound knowledge, the Public Safety believes they can accomplish a new type of “Human evolution” by using the Chainsaw Man’s power to remove concepts and thus make civilization more peaceful.
Chainsaw Man: Can Devils Have Children?
Devils are born from concepts humans fear; however, is it possible for them to reproduce?
As mentioned previously, the Aging Devil has an amicable relationship with the Public Safety. Since the Aging Devil is not attached to life, it has made the Public Safety Commission a favorable offer. In Chapter 174, depending on the contract terms, the Aging Devil is willing to be eaten by the Chainsaw Man.
The contract terms are as follows, as stated by Fumiko Mifune. For the Aging Devil to agree to be eaten without resisting, the Aging Devil wants the Public Safety to "kill 10,000 children with Japanese citizenship between infancy and nine years old, in front of mirrors." Many of the government officials within the room were in a state of shock once hearing the terms of the contract.
However, the Former Minister of Finance, Tadashi Hasegawa, an aging man confined to a wheelchair, quickly agreed to the terms of the Aging Devils contract. To ensure the contract terms were met, the Former Minister of Finance enlisted his grandson in the Private Sector to gather children affected by Devil attacks.
Furthermore, he also ordered the Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry to assemble the rest through an international adoption. By giving the orphans Japanese citizenship, the Former Minister of Finance believes foreign-born children will also satisfy the contract. He believes that the 10,000 lives of young children are a “small price to pay for the future of Japan.” However, he likely agreed to these terms as they favored him. To further seal the deal, the Former Minister ensured the Public Safety that they would provide them with the children within 48 hours.
Chainsaw Man: Why Is Chapter 167 So Controversial?
While provocative content is nothing new for series creator Tatsuki Fujimoto, this latest incident between Denji, Asa, and Yoru might be unique.
In Chapter 178, Yoru and Asa blow the Pochita Chainsaw Man to bits, leaving only his upper body. Previously, The War Devil turned her children, the Tank and Gun Devil, into weapons, thus replacing her missing arms. After sustaining an injury to his right arm, the Pochita Chainsaw Man flees to a nearby Blood Drive, assisting in the donating by promoting giving blood.
However, the War Devil soon used the Statue of Liberty to turn it into a creature with a gun. With one shot, the War Devil created mass destruction and injured Pochita in the process. Soon after, the Aging Devil appeared, stating that it would save him and gave him some blood. The Aging Devil then commands Pochita to begin eating its legs, arms, lower half, upper half, and organs and saving its head for last. The Aging Devil also told Pochita about the terms of its contract, that with each bite, a child would die. However, it is not clear if Pochita will eat the Aging Devil.
