What Happens At The End Of Chicago Med Season 10, Episode 20, "The Invisible Hand"?
At the end of Chicago Med season 10, episode 20, Dr. Daniel Charles's mom Margaret's (Deanna Dunagan) fiance Frederick Lambert (French Stewart), who was admitted to the hospital, goes into shock. Margaret blames Daniel and says that if he hadn't been so angry and "wasted time" talking to him, then they would have known what was causing Frederick's problems. This is a haunting scene as Dr. Charles has been unpacking his childhood trauma. Just like the stand-out Max medical drama The Pitt shares the inner lives of the doctors and nurses,
Then, Naomi Howard (Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut) shares a difficult story with her mentor Dr. Cailtin Lenox (Sarah Ramos), about Dr. Nicholas Hayes (Brendan Hines). Lenox has developed feelings for Hayes, and they were planning to spend time in Myrtle Beach together after a medical conference. Naomi tells Lenox that Hayes harassed her, and Lenox says she's going to report it.
Dr. John Frost (Daren Barnet) and Dr. Dean Archer (Steven Weber) have been competing to see who can help more patients quicker. Frost wins, but Archer doesn't mind because he wants to look into a patient's previous diagnosis of a stress fracture more carefully. This scene proves that even if he's competitive and sometimes overly confident, Archer takes his responsibility as a doctor seriously. Season 10 of the medical drama has shown a more vulnerable side of Frost, Charles, and Archer, and this trend should definitely continue as fans want to get to know these tough characters better.
Dr. Charles and Dr. Mitch Ripley (Luke Mitchell) have a meaningful conversation when Charles shares that he never truly moved on from his family problems. Charles says he still feels "hostility," but lightens the mood when he jokes that he should get a chemical peel like Frederick. Then Charles cracks the case: Frederick's problems started when he had the cosmetic procedure done. He got a terrible bacterial infection in his spine. After Frederick tells Charles that his mom often brags about Charles, Charles changes his mind and supports the relationship.
The nurses' strike storyline was a focal point of the end of episode 19, "The Stories We Tell Ourselves", and it continues here. Joy Coleman (Krystel McNeil) tells Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett) that, after the nurses staged a "sick out" and pretended to be ill, the hospital has canceled their next meeting and doesn't appear to want to keep negotiating. Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) finds a solution and shows Maggie the new contract that includes an advisory committee where nurses can have their voices heard.
Hayes texts Lenox to ask if she's going to come on the trip, and she kicks her bag in frustration. Archer finds out that he was right to look further into his patient as her leg could have been amputated. Frost buys lunch for the nurses on Archer's dime. Frost apologizes to Maggie for being upset with her about seeing the truth about his past relationship with Ainsely, and he thanks her. Finally, Chicago Med season 10, episode 20 ends with a cliffhanger: Charles finds his mom unresponsive on a chair in the hospital.
Chicago Med Season 10, Episode 20 Sets Up A Shocking Finale
The ending of "The Invisible Hand" sets up the last two episodes of Chicago Med season 10. Since Charles doesn't know what happened to his mom or if she's going to wake up again, this emotional storyline will definitely be explored more in episode 21. Whether Charles's mom passes away or they can save her, Charles will have to continue to confront his difficult past. He might not be able to forgive her for the cold treatment he experienced growing up, but if his conversation with Dr. Luke Mitchell in episode 20 is any indication, Charles knows he has to find a way to move forward.
Now that the negotiations between Gaffney and the nurses are over, a few more storylines need to be wrapped up. There will likely be some resolution for Dr. Cailtin Lenox and Dr. Nick Hayes's storyline. The Chicago Med season 10 finale will also bring back some characters, and while not everyone's favorite doctor can return, there will likely be some fun and dramatic reunions.
