AMD is gearing up to launch a new Radeon RX 7000 series GPU called the RX 7900 GRE (Golden Rabbit Edition), but it will be exclusive to China. The card is expected to launch on July 28 and there are no details on pricing yet. Leaked images of the GPU show a Sapphire Nitro+ variant that has a triple fan cooler design similar to the Radeon RX 7900 XT, but with a few changes. Rumors around the specifications suggest that it will feature a new Navi configuration.

The Radeon RX 7900 XT and 7900 XTX were unveiled in November last year to compete with Nvidia’s RTX 40 series of cards. The Radeon 7000 series is based on the RDNA 3 microarchitecture and TSMC 5nm process, making it quite efficient in terms of power draw. Then in May of this year, the company released the more budget-friendly Radeon RX 7600. Recently, there have been rumors about three new cards: the Radeon RX 7700, the RX 7800, and now the RX 7900 GRE.

According to known tipster @momomo_us on Twitter, the Radeon RX 7900 GRE will be launched on July 28. The tipster cites a BiliBili report confirming AMD’s participation in the China Digital Entertainment Expo & Conference (ChinaJoy 2023), which is scheduled from July 28 to July 31 in Shanghai. It is expected that the company will unveil its new GPU, the Radeon RX 7900 GRE, at the event. While AMD has not shared any details about the GPU, there have been quite a few leaks giving us an idea about what to expect.

The leaked images show a Sapphire Nitro+ Radeon RX 7900 GRE graphics card with a triple fan cooler much like the standard Sapphire Nitro+ Radeon RX 7900 XT, but with some tweaks. As for the specifications, the packaging for the GPU mentions 16GB VRAM which is lower than the standard RX 7900 XT's 20GB. It is expected to come with 84 RDNA 3 compute units, the same as the 7900 XT. It is said to be powered by dual 8-pin connectors and has an ARGB header, a Fan-In connector, and a BIOS switch.

The MSI Radeon RX 7900 XT Gaming Trio Classic 20G provides the best value on the market for intense 4K gaming. With a boost clock speed of 2400 MHz and 20 GB of GDDR6 memory, this MSI graphics card outshines the competition. The graphics card's Torx 4.0 fan uses a ring-shaped construction to direct airflow toward heatsinks. Relying on a brushed aluminum backplate, the MSI Radeon RX 7900 XT Gaming Trio Classic 20G is built to withstand years of heat and abuse suffered in a gaming rig.

The lower VRAM falls in line with the rumors that suggest this new GPU will use a new Navi configuration which could be a hybrid between the Navi 31 and Navi 32 chipset. As per PCGamesHardware, the RX 7900 GRE is expected to come with a boost clock of 2396MHz and a TGP of 300W. Comparing it to the RX 7900 XT which is more power-hungry at 315W (TBP) and has a boost clock of 2400MHz, we can see that the performance could be very close to the XT.

Now while the card will be exclusive to the Chinese market, it is expected to be cheaper than the RX 7900 XT which launched at $899 but is available for around $750 to $1000, depending on the board partner. It is unclear at this point if AMD will bring the card to the US later, or a different GPU with similar specifications. For reference, the RX 7600 starts as low as $258 going up to $340. The RX 7900 XTX, on the other hand, starts around $940 and goes up to $1850.
