Summary

  • A Chrono Trigger fan posted pixel art of the character Frog reimagined as Kermit the Frog.
  • The pixel art has been met with plenty of fanfare online.
  • Although Chrono Trigger is approaching its 30th anniversary, Square Enix has not made any announcement regarding the title.

A piece of fan art recently attracted attention online, as it reimagined a popular Chrono Trigger party member as the world-famous Muppet Kermit the Frog. The fan's creation garnered over 180,000 views and ignited massive praise from other gamers, who were glad to see Chrono Trigger get some attention in 2024.

Chrono Trigger is a staple of the JRPG genre, combining science fiction and fantasy in a unique way when compared to Square's Final Fantasy franchise by incorporating time travel into the mix. One of the many party members players can recruit in Chrono Trigger is an anthropomorphic frog who fights with a sword and can even use magic.

Twitter user artofpip made waves on the social media site by reimagining the character as Kermit the Frog from the massively popular Muppets franchise in a work of pixel art. The piece shows a masterful rendition of Kermit the Frog wearing Frog's usual attire: a pair of white pants, some golden armor, and a flowing cape, as he grips his sword and looks out over the horizon.

Fans flocked to the replies to praise the user's creation, with many reminiscing about the Chrono Trigger character and gushing about the nostalgia the art triggered. Others were simply happy to see the game get so much attention in some form, as Chrono Trigger is approaching its 30th anniversary next year but has yet to receive a modern port beyond the Steam version. Originally released for the SNES in 1995, the game was later ported to the PlayStation in 1999, allowing even more potential fans to experience the now-beloved role-playing game.

Square Enix launched a remaster of Chrono Cross a few years back, which served as a follow-up to the original Chrono Trigger and had many fans clamoring for more from the short-lived JRPG franchise. However, that game remains the latest release in the Chrono series, and though talks of a full-on remake have long been rumored by fans, there are no official plans for the series to return at the moment.

In the meantime, fan art remains one of the main ways in which fans of games like Chrono Trigger keep discussions going about their favorite titles, even if the work in question is something as humorous as this. Thanks to fans, Kermit himself has been modded into numerous games, such as the Spider-Man player who turned Peter Parker into the iconic frog.
