While the first game had unique buildings that served as attractions, Cities: Skylines 2 has signature buildings. Instead of unlocking them by reaching milestones or spending development points, signature buildings only unlock once a city meets the set requirements.

Most of these requirements involve a certain number of zone buildings, but a few have more special needs. Signature buildings are free to place and serve the same function as the zone type they belong to, plus some other benefit unique to the building. The only problem is figuring out how to build a city that meets these requirements.

How to Place Signature Buildings

Signature buildings can unlock as early as the Tiny Village milestone of Cities: Skylines 2. The ability to place them unlocks as soon as the city has 1,000 active cells of medium-density row housing, although the housing has to be North American or European and not a mix of both. Each tile next to a street is one cell, so a full-size row house takes up six cells.

Reaching this requirement will unlock the first signature building, which is either Vertigo Square with EU housing or Baltar Pines with NA housing. These buildings are row houses, which means they hold residents and prefer the same conditions as other residential buildings. Players can also get signature commercial, office, and industrial buildings that work best in their respective zones, and businesses can rent the buildings to start attracting customers and paying taxes.

While they act like zone buildings, players must manually place each signature building, and they can move them around like any normal civic building. The biggest advantage of signature buildings is that placing them is free, and they provide extra bonuses on top of being a normal zone building.

How to Unlock Each Signature Building

Many zone types have NA and EU variants that players can set as they fill in new areas. Signature buildings also have NA and EU versions, but players can place both types of zones in one city and thus earn and place every variant. In fact, players can replace an existing zone with NA or EU and quickly earn the other variant without changing the city's demographics. The big downside to this approach is that the replacement buildings start at level one.

To explain the terms, Well-Being improves citizen happiness in the area, Attractiveness means the building (or city) draws in more tourists, and Efficiency means the building type requires fewer resources (and thus fewer road vehicles) to function. In addition, zone cells don't count towards signature buildings unless a building is sitting on them.
