Summary

  • Cities: Skylines 2 is expected to receive a major economic update in June, addressing player feedback and improving the gameplay experience.
  • Paradox Interactive is committed to improving game performance on consoles, prioritizing fixing crashes and improving FPS.
  • The publisher is offering transparency on update timelines, but delays are still possible - fans may have to wait longer for improvements.

Paradox Interactive has issued a new timeline for all the updates coming to Cities: Skylines 2. Fans of the city building simulator will be glad of the new features coming to Cities: Skylines 2, although further delays might result in these changes arriving later than expected.

Cities: Skylines 2 has had a troubled development since it was released in October 2023. Many gamers found Colossal Order's city management sequel to be plagued with bugs and technical issues . The lack of mod support at launch was a further source of discontent, as was the recent Beach Properties DLC. Many players found the paid DLC’s content to be lacking, especially when many of the game’s existing issues had still not been fixed. To the publisher’s credit, Paradox Interactive has issued refunds to everyone who purchased the Beach Properties DLC and instead offered it as a free download.

Despite the game’s turbulent launch, Paradox and Colossal Order seem committed to improving Cities: Skylines 2. The publisher has just issued a new statement detailing the game's upcoming patches and content. Featuring an overhaul of Cities: Skylines 2’s economic mechanics, the next major update is scheduled for release sometime between June 3 and June 19. With this rework of one of the game’s fundamental systems, Paradox hopes to “increase the importance of managing the economy, increase the challenge, and make it clearer to the player how the economy is affected by your choices.” The update will also feature some other requested improvements to the building upgrade system.

Cities: Skylines 2 Update Roadmap

  • June: New Major Economic Update, building upgrade improvements.
  • July-August: No planned updates due to "summer lock" staffing shortages.
  • Post-summer: Creator Packs, new service buildings and vehicles, asset editor.
  • October: PS5 and Xbox Series X/S console release.

Following the economy update, the developers are working on subsequent patches to add more free content to the game, such as new service buildings and vehicles. Other upcoming features include a “surface tool to allow more freedom to paint the areas around buildings,” new Creator Packs, and an asset editor which will be invaluable to modders in Cities: Skylines 2. However, these later updates have been postponed until after summer. While some gamers have praised the publisher’s transparency over these updated timeframes, others are disappointed at having to face yet more delays.

Fixing these crashes and improving the FPS is the highest priority when it comes to the console builds.

Paradox is also working on updates to address Cities: Skylines 2’s performance issues on consoles. Despite being originally set for a day-one launch on Xbox Game Pass and PS5, Cities: Skylines 2’s console release has been postponed multiple times due to optimization and performance issues. Paradox says that "fixing these crashes and improving the FPS is the highest priority when it comes to the console builds." The console launch is currently scheduled for October 2024, although the publisher confesses that “the window for an October release is shrinking and it might have to be delayed further.” Despite these potential further delays, Paradox and Colossal Order seem invested in achieving the game’s potential, so hopefully players can hope for a more polished experience when Cities: Skylines 2 finally releases on consoles.
