Civilization 6 players should make the most of these seven unique improvements, as they offer fantastic benefits that can provide a decisive edge.

These unique units can also be in the form of land units and naval units. Unique land units are more well-equipped to take control of zones on the map to ensure a safe path for the siege units to knock on the cities' defenses. Some of these units have unique advantages compared to the others, making each of them strong in their own way. For Civilization 6 players who are looking to make quick work of their enemies, there are several unique land units available to them.

7 Tagma

Strong Heavy Knight To Bulldoze The Enemy Ranks

An image of Civilization 6: Tagma
  • Able to ignore the enemy's zone of control
  • Grants +4 Combat Strength or +4 Religious Strength to nearby land units
  • Able to be built quickly via Byzantine's Hippodrome

Civilization 6 players who have experience against the Byzantines will recall how hard it is to deal with their early Tagma rush that can be churned out in the early stages of the game. The unique heavy cavalry is able to ignore zone of control from the enemy's land units and blast through the map with ease.

Religious Victories can be difficult win conditions to pull off in Civilization 6, but these nations help make it a little easier.

Moreover, Tagma grants bonuses to land units (either combat or religious). This makes them able to also escort Missionaries and Apostles to spread religion securely, even when the recipient is unwilling.

6 Impi

An Almost Unbeatable Anti-Cavalry Unit

An image of Civilization 6: Impi
  • Able to gain 25% more experience
  • Significantly lower Production and Gold maintenance cost
  • Flanking bonus is increased by 2

Seeing Zulu can promote caution to every Civilization 6 player in regard to an impending Impi rush during the starting point of the midgame, thanks to their strong Impi. Once the Zulu is able to mass-produce the Impi, they can build on their warmongering aspiration to win a Domination Victory easily.

The Impi is able to go toe-to-toe against the replaced Pikemen with ease, and with their flanking bonus, a formation of 4-5 Impi can easily overtake Zulu's unprepared neighbor. Therefore, it is highly advised to have a military buildup beforehand when finding out that Zulu is a direct neighbor.

5 Llanero

Rapidly Overtake Other Civilizations With Llanero Invasion

An image of Civilization 6: Llanero
  • Gain +2 Combat Strength for each Llanero on adjacent tiles
  • Significantly lower gold maintenance cost
  • Able to regain all HP when a nearby Comandante General uses their retire ability

Once a player with the Colombian civilization gets started with their Llanero production, it will be hard to stop their impending Domination Victory thanks to the mixture of their unique Great People, the Comandante Generals, and the overwhelming strength of the Llanero.

The unique light cavalry unit is able to quickly overwhelm other civilizations due to their cheapness in maintaining and bonuses from present Comandante Generals. When in a formation together with 5-6 other Llanero, the army can quickly overwhelm a capital with ease.

4 Digger

Strong Replacement For The Powerful Infantry

An image of Civilization 6: Digger
  • Require no strategic resource to build
  • Gain bonus combat strength when on coastal tiles and outside Australian territory

Although Australia is a generally peaceful civilization, they can quickly overturn a surprise invasion from other civilizations to their advantage with their bonus Production from the leader's unique ability after war has been declared and the strength of their unique Infantry replacement, Digger.

The unique land unit requires no strategic resource, unlike the Infantry it replaces, which requires Oil, a late-game resource. Moreover, Diggers gain bonus strength when fighting on coastal tiles and outside Australian territory, making them the perfect unit to respond to an invasion.

3 Legion

Pave A Quick Invasion With Their Unique Builder Charges

An image of Civilization 6: Legion
  • Has 1 build charge that can be used to construct Roman Fort or clear terrain
  • Has higher Combat Strength than the Swordsman

Replacing the Swordsman, Legion is the perfect answer for Roman attempts in getting an early Domination Victory while other civilizations still struggle with defenses and units. The initial combat strength makes them quite powerful when going toe-to-toe with other Swordsmen that they are replacing.

However, a Legion's true strength lies within their ability to clear terrain. An experienced player will be able to rapidly produce 5–6 Legions in just 10 turns with the help of multiple Woods and Jungle clearing, thanks to their unique ability. This makes the Romans a fearsome civilization to watch out for.

2 Immortal

A Ranged Menace With The Strength Of A Swordsman

An image of Civilization 6: Immortal
  • Able to do Ranged Attacks (35 Combat Strength)

Although they are strong in the early game, Swordsman is often hindered due to their status as a Melee unit, making it easy to outflank them with certain strategies. However, the Persian's Immortal can simply do a Ranged Attack when facing a hit-and-run strategy while retaining the fearsome 35 Combat Strength in melee combat.

Due to this advantage, Immortals will be able to quickly overtake cities without taking too much damage due to penalties for attacking in melee. Persians could quickly become a threat should they be allowed to build up Immortals unimpeded.

1 Hul'che

The Perfect Defensive Unit For A Turtling Strategy

An image of Civilization 6: Hul'che
  • Has a higher Ranged Strength than normal Archers (28)
  • Attacking wounded units grant +5 Ranged Strength

As a civilization that is oriented toward a Science Victory, Mayans will often try to be as defensive as possible while building up their Campuses and Farms to gain quick growth in both Population and Science. Other civilizations could try to stop them, but it will be tricky thanks to the fearsome Hul'che.

Civilization 6: Best Civilizations For A Science Victory

Science can push everything forward, but it's easier to achieve for some nations!

The replacement for Archer has a higher ranged strength, and when coupled with bonus strength in their own territory thanks to the Lady Six Sky's unique ability, they will be able to repel invasions with ease. Moreover, they obtain bonus Ranged Strength when attacking wounded units, making them perfect to finish units that have been damaged by Cities' Ranged Attack.
