Back in February 2023, publisher 2K announced that a new entry in the Civilization franchise was officially in development, alongside the announcement that long-time Firaxis members Jake Solomon and Steve Martin would be leaving the studio. After over a year of waiting, fans have finally gotten their first look at Civilization 7, with a trailer dropping during Summer Game Fest's live showcase.

Harkening back to the teaser trailers of the franchise's past, Civilization 7's reveal takes fans through the ages, all the way from Ancient Era stone carvings right up until space flight. Along the way, fans got a few brief glimpses at some familiar faces, seemingly confirming their existence as playable leaders in Civilization 7.

No Civilizations or Leaders have been officially confirmed for Civilization 7 yet, but fans are sure to find out more about the roster during Civ 7's August showcase.

Civilization 7 has finally gotten a teaser trailer, and with it comes many prospects for how Civ 7's can learn from other 4X games that have released.

Every Civ Teased in Civilization 7's Reveal Trailer

  • Egyptian
  • Chinese
  • Mongolians
  • American/English

The first familiar face fans will spot in the Civilization 7 reveal trailer is an Egyptian woman towering above some pyramids. While there are a few historical figures this statue could represent, it seems most likely that this is meant to be a depiction of Cleopatra, the infamous Queen of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt and a franchise staple who's appeared in the vast majority of Civilization titles.

As the camera sweeps over Cleopatra's shoulders, the Great Wall of China is revealed, with a fierce battle seemingly raging on top. It seems as though this battle is depicting the Mongol Conquest of China, with the attacking forces wearing fur armor that's often associated with Mongolian warriors. Two towering statues then appear above the Great Wall, with one of them likely being the Mongol leader Genghis Khan, or perhaps one of his descendants who also invaded China, such as Kublai Khan. It's been a while since the Mongolians were present in Civilization's day-one roster, and while this trailer doesn't strictly confirm that'll be the case in Civ 7, it seems probable.

From then on, Civilization 7's reveal trailer gets a little more general. As more eras are shown, it becomes less clear which specific Civilization is being depicted. Fans are shown a Renaissance-era city that could belong to a plethora of nations, and then a harbor setting that appears quite colonial in aesthetic. This harbor setting could be teasing an American or English civilization, though it's pretty unclear.

Every Era Shown in Civilization 7's Reveal Trailer

  • Ancient Era
  • Medieval Era
  • Renaissance Era
  • Industrial Era
  • Modern Era
  • Atomic Era

For decades now, the Civilization franchise has followed the same general formula for its eras, and based on the reveal trailer, it seems as though Civilization 7 is going to follow suit. The Civilization 7 Summer Game Fest trailer takes fans on a journey through each standard Civ era, from Ancient Era caravans to the Medieval Era's melee warfare, and from the Renaissance Era's penchant for art and culture to the Industrial Era's steam-powered transport, to finally a Modern Era city and an Atomic Era rocket.

As the trailer moves through these major eras, the material of the on-screen diorama changes to represent the materials associated with the period. For instance, in the Ancient Era, the diorama is made of stone, in the Renaissance Era it's bronze, and in the Industrial Era it's iron/steel. It's unclear if Civilization 6: Gathering Storm's Future Era will be present in Civ 7 as the trailer ends with space flight.
