One of the things that makes games like Civilization VII so popular is the way that they let players build their own towns and cities and govern them however they see fit. For better or worse, this can often lead to some really unique outcomes, while also providing the player with a sense of ownership and fulfillment that few other games can match.

How Long is Civ 7? (Civilization VII Campaign Length)

A standard Civ 7 campaign will last around twelve hours, although players can speed things up considerably by tinkering with the game settings.

Unfortunately, at launch, there is no way to change the name of a town or city in Civ 7, much to the dismay of many players. There's arguably a good reason for this, although those who really want to rename their Civilization VII settlements have cause to be optimistic, as there's a strong possibility that the functionality will be coming to the game sooner rather than later.

As of Title Update 1.1.1, players can rename their towns and cities by navigating to the settlement menu and clicking on the pencil icon or pressing the R3 (PlayStation) or RS (Xbox) button. This method can also be used to rename Commander units.

One of the biggest changes in Civ 7 is the ability to switch civilizations each time a new age begins. When doing so, the name of the player's settlements will sometimes change to match their new civ. As such, it is technically possible for players to influence the new names of their settlements through their choices. However, players are unable to manually rename their Civ 7 settlements like they could in previous installments.

As series fans will no doubt remember, the ability to rename Civilization VI settlements was patched into the game post-release, so there's still hope that the functionality will be coming to Civ 7 at some point. Indeed, the ability to choose a name for new Civilization VII religions was added to the game right at the last minute, and the devs have confirmed that they will continue to add fan-requested features to Civ 7 in future updates.

Given that fans started a petition asking for the ability to rename Civ 7 cities back in January, it seems safe to assume that this will be fairly high on Firaxis' agenda. Even if it isn't, though, modders will likely find a way to do it fairly quickly, so for those who just can't wait to start changing the names of their Civilization VII settlements, it's a good idea to keep an eye on popular modding sites like Nexus Mods, as if the devs don't add the functionality, a Civ 7 city rename mod will appear online sooner rather than later.
