A Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 dev has already opened up about the studio’s next project, teasing that “great ideas” are being mapped out for the studio's follow-up title. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a turn-based RPG developed by Sandfall Interactive and published by Kepler Interactive, flaunting a dark fantasy Belle Époque setting serving as a stunning backdrop for the expeditioners’ mission to conquer the Paintress.
Expedition 33 reached universal acclaim from critics and gamers alike within weeks of its April 2025 release, reaching a 92% score on OpenCritic across all platforms. The first 24 hours saw 500,000 units sold of the game, and the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, even took the time to celebrate the title’s accomplishments. In a twist of fate, Expedition 33 reached an impressive and meta milestone recently, achieving 3.3 million sales in 33 weeks, which echoes the game’s expedition number.
Clair Obscur Pays a Subtle Tribute to Its Composer
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 fans notice a subtle detail within the game that is likely a homage to its well-regarded composer.
In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Sandfall's chief operating officer and producer, François Meurisse, confirmed the team will be making another game, following more exciting news that Expedition 33’s Monolith Set is offering themed items from the Collector’s Edition at a reduced price. “There will be another video game, for sure,” Meurisse assured, but the producer was tight-lipped on giving away specific details, understandably. It was also noted that the Expedition 33 director, Guillaume Broche, already has “great ideas” for the next project, but the producer admitted the following endeavor will be “challenging” with higher expectations attached.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Producer Confirms Another Game Is in the Works With "Great Ideas" Behind It
Despite the game’s overwhelming success, Expedition 33 fans noted some missed opportunities, but Sandfall touched on the team’s learning curve during Expedition 33’s development, which would be very advantageous going into the development of the follow-up game. “We’ll start from a more efficient position than when we started the company five years ago,” Meurisse continued, explaining that the team has “grown up” and developed new skills throughout Expedition 33’s journey. The producer highlighted how the team was made up of many juniors to begin with, and they learned to work together to produce a game for the ages.
In addition to celebrating Expedition 33’s successful release and already planning the developer’s next game, the Expedition 33 director has taken time to share advice with fellow developers. Broche encouraged other devs to craft games they would genuinely enjoy playing themselves, and highlighted that authenticity and teamwork are key factors during the development process. Despite feeling very lucky that the game has gained immense popularity, the Sandfall team seems to have found a winning formula that can be built upon in the successor.
