Clai Obscur: Expedition 33 update 1.4.0 is now available for download on PC and consoles. The game's first and likely last patch for July 2025, this release introduces multiple quality-of-life improvements and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 combat changes, among a variety of other novelties.

Sandfall Interactive's critically acclaimed RPG has received a handful of patches since its late April 2025 release. The most recent of those dropped on June 11, when Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was updated to version 1.3.1.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Offers Free Steam Download as 'Special Thank-You' To Fans

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 releases a free Steam download as a 'special thank-you' to fans of the RPG.

The French developer continued this streak with the game's sixth patch, which rolled out earlier today, July 30. The official changelog accompanying the update contains 17 items, four of which are of the quality-of-life variety. Among their highlights is a battle retry prompt, added by popular request, which will appear whenever the party is defeated on the game over—or "expedition failed," to use the RPG's jargon—screen. While not as flexible as Metaphor: ReFantazio's mid-battle restart option, the new prompt is still more convenient than reloading a save.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Adds Useful Battle Planning Indicator, Autoplaying Dialogue, and More

Another novelty arrives in the form of a Lumina cost indicator for abilities, which has been added to Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's Pictos menu. With every ability now having a clearly displayed cost, the revised interface should allow for easier strategizing and planning while tweaking a character's build. On that note, there's still no indication that Pictos presets are in the works despite a vocal section of players requesting them since the game's April 2025 launch. The July 30 patch adds two other quality-of-life features: separate volume sliders for exploration and combat, and a toggle for autoplaying dialogue. The autoplay option is accessible in the settings and can also be adjusted mid-dialogue, with the game always saving the most recent change and using it the next time dialogue starts again.

There is more to come in the future.

On the technical side of things, the 1.4.0 update adds a low-latency mode and frame generation for Nvidia's DLSS and Intel's XeSS technologies on compatible GPUs. While technically a turn-based game, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 incorporates quite a few action elements for a JRPG-like experience, so anyone who isn't already getting at least 45 or so frames per second may want to avoid frame generation because it might significantly increase latency and potentially mess with their reaction times—something that enemy attack patterns already do quite successfully on their own.

While it's presently unclear how long Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 will keep receiving updates, Sandfall Interactive has confirmed the 1.4.0 patch won't be its final revision. "There is more to come in the future," the developer's latest patch notes read, without elaborating on the matter.
