A live-action feature film adaptation of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has recently been revealed. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is not even out yet, so this is certainly a surprising move, as fans do not even know many details about the game’s story or its characters yet.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was originally announced during the Xbox Games Showcase in June 2024. The turn-based RPG will have action elements and is currently being developed by French studio Sandfall Interactive. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 will focus on the journey of the members of Expedition 33, who go on a quest to destroy a god-like villain known as the Paintress to prevent her from painting death, causing individuals of a certain age to vanish forever.

One actor’s debut in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 marks their first video game role, joining a cast that mirrors Baldur’s Gate 3's fan engagement.
Now, Variety has reported that a live-action film adaptation of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is currently being made by Sandfall Interactive and Story Kitchen. According to Story Kitchen founders Dmitri M. Johnson and Mike Goldberg, they hope Clair Obscur’s “compelling narrative and complex characters” will resonate with both gamers and moviegoers alike. The movie will be produced by Johnson, Goldberg, Timothy I. Stevenson, and Elena Sandoval, and casting and directional decisions are still being made.
There's a Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Movie In the Works
While certainly surprising, an adaptation of the game could make sense. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 will be out on April 24, and the movie will likely not be ready before 2026. With its unique French Belle Epoque-inspired visuals, Clair Obscur could likely be a big hit, which would certainly help the movie to become more well-known.
The collector’s edition of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has already sold out, too, indicating that the game is gaining popularity quickly. The collector’s edition was available for PS5 and came with a physical edition of the game, as well as several goodies, like a hand-painted monolith music box, a Steelbook, a 48-page artbook, and some digital in-game content.
A few days ago, it was also announced that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 will be enhanced for the PS5 Pro. While Xbox and PC gamers won’t enjoy the PS5 Pro’s exclusive features, the game will be a day one release for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, being free for subscribers of the services as soon as it’s out. Time will tell how successful Clair Obscur’s game and movie will be, but everything points to a successful release.
