In Classroom of the Elite, those who consider Kiyotaka Ayanokoji to be their friend or ally, like Horikita Suzune, Yosuke Hirata, and Kei Karuizawa, are in for a big surprise when they discover the truth. He does not consider them as allies or friends, but rather as mere tools, pawns in fact, to achieve what he wants.

Ayanokoji is the main protagonist of the Classroom of the Elite, and his presence cannot go unnoticed. He looks unbothered and has no hint of emotion in his eyes, but there is more to him. He is quite anti-social and misses social clues, but he is able to interact and attract people to himself. He treats them like his friends, but deep down, he does not regard them in the same light they do him.

7 Honami Ichinose

Class B's Leader

Ichinose is a Class 2-B student, while Ayanokoji is in Class 1-D. Their paths would not have crossed if not for Kikyo Kushida, as they met after Ichinose bumped into her and Ayanokoji and asked if they were dating. Later on, Ichinose goes to meet Ayanokoji for help, as she does not have the courage to turn down her admirer. Ayanokoji does not help her in the way that she wants, but he gives her good advice that she follows.

Ichinose was of great help to Ayanokoji and his class in helping Ken Sudo prove his innocence against some troublemakers in Class C. Ichinose and Ayanokoji also helped Airi Sakura when an older man tried to have his way with her. Normally, it would be safe to assume these two have a mutual relationship that makes them friends, but fans know how Ayanokoji views people. He sees them as tools.

6 Ken Sudo

Class Troublemaker

Ayanokoji puts a lot off effort into helping some of his classmates, but it is for a greater purpose. Ayanokoji has gone out of his way a couple of times to help Sudo and prevent him from getting expelled. He even let go of 50,000 points after Sudo failed a test to stop his expulsion.

Ayanokoji seems to always be on the lookout for Ken, and given Ken’s short temper, he always finds himself in some sort of trouble. Ayonokoji was vital in proving Ken’s innocence when some guys from Class C framed him. Viewers have no idea what Ayanokoji really thinks of Sudo, but he has certainly come through for him. Sudo owes his place in the Advanced Nurturing School to Ayanokoji.

5 Yosuke Hirata

Mr. Popular

Hirata is the class representative. Right from the first day of school, Ayanokoji noticed him and his personality, noting to himself that Hirata would be popular among the students. Ayonokoji was right. These two had minimal interactions up until the survival test on the island.

When a girl’s underwear went missing during the test, the boys were searched, per the request of the girls. As the class representative, Hirata was in charge of searching the boys, and he noticed Ayanokoji had the underwear in his pocket. He had Ayanokoji’s back during the search, because he knew he was not the type of person to be guilty of such an act. Hirata might think of Ayanokoji as a friend, but at the end of season one, it became clear to viewers that Ayanokoji did not regard him as a friend or an ally, but as a pawn for his use.

4 Airi Sakura

The Shy But Keen Observer

Fans took notice of Sakura when Sudo was at risk of expulsion, thanks to some of the guys from Class C. Sakura was the only one who witnessed the incident, but did not want to come forward. However, thanks to Ayanokoji, she does so eventually. She and Ayanokoji have had multiple interactions since then. Ayanokoji even stepped in when an older repair man was making advances on her. He cornered Sakura and tried to force himself on her, but Ayanokoji and Ichinose stopped him.

Sakura is very shy, but Ayanokoji appeals to her to be free around him since they are schoolmates. During the paper shuffle test, she approaches Ayanokoji’s study group because she wants to be in the same group as him. They also teamed up to find essentials during the survival test to help their classmates settle in their spot.

3 Kikyo Kushida

Kushida plans to befriend everyone in school, and she meets Ayanokoji to help her with Horikita Suzune, the only person who does not want to be her friend. Soon after, Ayanokoji sees the real Kushida after secretly following her one night. Kushida curses Horikita for not wanting to be her friend, and notices that Ayanokoji has seen her. Unfazed, she grabs his hand and places it on her body, saying she would accuse him of assaulting her if he revealed her secret.

Since that incident, these two have been wary of each other. Ayanokoji and Kushida interact, but they both have ulterior motives. Kushida wants him out of the school, and Ayanokoji sees her as a tool, used by others, Class C members, and him when he needs to.

2 Kei Karuizawa

Ayanokoji's Efficient Informant

To Ayanokoji, Karuizawa is a pawn he intends to use for quite a while. Ayanokoji has been protecting her since her bullying incident on the cruise ship with some Class C girls. They have been in contact over the phone for a while, and he has been using her to get information from others.

Unfortunately for Karuizawa, she develops feelings for Ayanokoji. Ayanokoji does not see her in that light or even consider her his friend, but he acts like one. When Ryuen took Karuizawa hostage in order to find out who the mastermind was, she was ready to protect Ayanokoji with her life. Ryuen tortured her in a cold room and with water until Ayanokoji came and saved her. Later, Ayonokoji reveals to the viewers that it was all part of his plan to get Karuizawa to trust and depend on him more, thus making her a very efficient pawn in his game.

1 Suzune Horikita

Number One Pawn

Ayanokoji notices Suzune in the first episode on the bus, and surprisingly, they turn out to be classmates and seatmates. At first, Suzune is not open to being friends or allies with Ayanokoji, but as the anime progresses, they spend more time together during and after school hours. By the end of season one, Suzune admits to Ayanokoji that she sees him as an ally, but he does not see her the same way.

They both want to advance to Class A and will do anything to achieve their goal, even if it means organizing study groups and dropping 50,000 points to ensure Ken Sudo survives expulsion. Most of the time, Ayanokoji does all the work and gives Suzune all the credit, making their classmates praise and see her as a valuable member of their class.
