Elysium is touted as an open-world co-op survival adventure set within the ruins of a futuristic world filled with ancient machinery but overrun by corrupted, mutated lifeforms. Players must scavenge for resources while exploring the remnants of the fallen utopia, all while fighting against mechanical monsters that seek to stop their efforts of rebuilding. In order to fully restore everything to its former glory, players will need to re-power old towers and transit lines, with each activation unveiling new paths, more resources, and hints at the intelligence still lurking within the ruins. Similar to the enemies in the Horizon games, Elysium features corrupted animal guardians, some mechanical and others altered by radiation. To defeat these beasts, players will have to study their behaviors and patterns and take them down with crafted gear and scrapped firepower.
In addition to exploration and combat, Elysium features extensive crafting mechanics, similar to the gameplay in The Forest. Players will select a location to start building their base, using wood, stone, and ore to upgrade and expand this shelter as they progress. Better tools and weapons can also be crafted, though players will want to be mindful of managing their resources. Solo players will want to prioritize their needs, while those choosing to enjoy the up-to-4-player online co-op mode can share materials and tackle larger challenges together.
