Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered is being review bombed on Steam as Activision finds itself in hot water with fans over the shutdown of a highly anticipated mod called H2M. Despite being a popular entry in the series when it was first released in 2016, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered is now at the center of controversy, with over 1,000 negative reviews left on the title in just a single day.
As fans geared up for the release of H2M, which was a highly anticipated mod for Modern Warfare Remastered that aimed to act as a remaster of 2009's Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare Remastered saw a huge surge in players flocking to the title to prepare for the mod's release on August 16. Given that new Call of Duty titles are released annually, Modern Warfare Remastered had sat somewhat dormant in terms of players for many years now. While the surge in players was theorized to be due to the H2M mod, it was also helped by a sale that allowed Steam users to pick up the shooter for 50% off.
August 21 Is the End of an Era for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
As post-launch support for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 winds down, August 21 is going to mark the end of an era for the hit shooter.
Unfortunately, just one day before H2M was due to be released to the public, Activision hit the Modern Warfare Remastered mod with a cease and desist. Given the immense popularity of the mod, Call of Duty fans haven't taken too kindly to the sudden shutdown and have opted to review bomb Modern Warfare Remastered on Steam. Almost immediately, the 2016 shooter received an influx of negative reviews, resulting in a sharp decline in the game's rating.
Modern Warfare Remastered Plummets to Overwhelmingly Negative
While its overall rating has now dropped to mixed, Modern Warfare Remastered's recent review badge has plummeted to overwhelmingly negative. Generally, initial Modern Warfare Remastered reviews were positive, with the shooter having a highly respectable Metacritic score of 83. However, the shutdown of H2M has resulted in players boycotting the game and leaving a magnitude of negative reviews to voice their dissatisfaction with Activision's handling of the situation.
Many of the negative reviews cite Activision's lack of desire to develop an official remaster of Modern Warfare 2's multiplayer as the reason why they were looking forward to the release of H2M. While the studio did release a remastered version of the game's campaign in 2020, Activision confirmed it had no plans to develop a multiplayer mode for Modern Warfare 2 Remastered.
Steam user chattsveryown, who was one of many users to refund Modern Warfare Remastered after leaving a negative review, said it was "lame" that Activision would allow thousands of users to purchase the remaster, only to send a cease and desist to the mod creators after the game was no longer on sale. Another negative review from user Sad.Sponge said that it's clear Activision only cares about the money and not the players. Even though H2M required players to own an official copy of Modern Warfare Remastered, it's doubtful that Activision will reverse its decision and allow the mod to be released, despite the massive outcry from the community.
