Modern Warfare 2 has made a complete overhaul to the Gunsmith system, allowing players to tune their attachments and unlock a plethora of weapons. While the Gunsmith has been a staple in the Call of Duty franchise, many players don’t know how to use it and get confused browsing through the thousands of attachments to create their ideal build and the best weapon loadout.

The Gunsmith system has a lot of features to it, from creating complex weapon designs and camos to unclocking attachments. So, it’s understandable wading through the options can be overwhelming for Modern Warfare 2 players.

What is the Gunsmith System in Modern Warfare 2?

The Gunsmith system is a sub-menu designed for players to unlock weapon attachments, customize their weapons, and build their ideal loadout. Players unlock this submenu at rank 4, but this doesn’t automatically unlock attachments. Similarly, players can alter all Modern Warfare 2 weapons using the Gunsmith, but there's an exception to certain secondary weapons.

The Gunsmith system categorizes weapons into platforms, so when players unlock a weapon in MW2, they’re actually unlocking a platform. Each platform on the Gunsmith system has various Receivers, which are entirely different guns. Once a platform is unlocked, the player can change the receiver 3 or 4 various ways to unlock another weapon for a new category. Players who want to unlock a particular platform must use their player level to unlock the first gun. The other weapons in that platform can be unlocked by leveling the first weapon unlocked, which also unlocks the receivers for it.

To help players understand, here’s an example: The M4 weapons platform features 5 receivers - the M16 assault rifle, the 556 Icarus, the FSS Hurricane SMG, the FTAC Recon battle rifle, and the base M4 assault rifle. These weapons belong to different categories on MW2, but they’re on the same platform. So, if players unlock the base M4 assault rifle, it unlocks the other 4 receivers on the platform, which, in turn, unlocks different attachments as the player levels up.

When players unlock the attachments in the M4 platform, they can use them on all the weapons on the platform. This eliminates the grind and hassle of unlocking the attachments when leveling new guns. The attachments players can unlock include magazines, barrels, stocks, rear grips, under barrels, and ammunition.

This new system makes it easier for players to unlock various weapons by leveling specific weapons on a platform to unlock their receivers and attachments.
