Summary

  • PS5 exclusive game Concord is shutting down on September 6.
  • Concord's player count and sales were extremely low.
  • Options for Concord's future are being explored.

PS5 console exclusive hero-shooter game Concord is shutting down on September 6. Concord was first revealed to the world this past May, and right off the bat, it struggled to generate interest. Many criticized the game for being yet another hero-shooter in what is becoming an increasingly crowded market, while others were not impressed with how it seemed to ape the art style of Guardians of the Galaxy.

There continued to be little to no interest in Concord in the months following its announcement. The first Concord beta test was originally reserved for those that pre-ordered the game, but it was eventually opened up to anyone with a PS Plus subscription. On PC, hardly anyone participated in the free beta, with that apathy predictably carrying over to the full $40 release. Concord's player count on Steam never even hit 700 players, with the game's total sales believed to be around 25,000 copies between both PC and PS5.

Concord Servers Are Going Down Today

Concord players should note that the game's online multiplayer servers will be going down later today.

As Concord's player count continues to dwindle, it's been announced that the game is being taken offline indefinitely starting September 6. Concord sales are ceasing immediately and gamers that purchased the game for PS5 or PC will be getting a full refund for the game. Those that purchased from the PlayStation Store or PlayStation Direct will get a refund using their original payment method. Steam and Epic Games Store refunds should be automatic as well. Those that purchased a physical copy of Concord will have to work things out with the retailer where they purchased the game. Access to Concord will cease once refunds have been issued.

Concord Will Be Going Offline on September 6

Now, it should be stressed that this doesn't mean Concord is necessarily going to be gone forever. The developers acknowledged that the initial launch of Concord "didn't land" the way that it intended, and that it would "explore options" that will "better reach" players. Presumably, this could mean bringing Concord back as a free-to-play game down the line, which is what many have predicted from the jump. However, that was not outright stated. It's also possible PlayStation will cut its losses and Concord will never make a comeback. Regardless, it will be interesting to see what happens.

However, while many qualities of the experience resonated with players, we also recognize that other aspects of the game and our initial launch didn’t land the way we’d intended. Therefore, at this time, we have decided to take the game offline beginning September 6, 2024, and explore options, including those that will better reach our players.

If Concord does come back, it will be interesting to see if the developers address other criticisms that have been levied about the game. Beyond the $40 barrier, many have complained about Concord's character designs. A significant shift in art style and character design choices could go a long way in generating more interest in the game along with a free-to-play push, but that remains to be seen.

What's awkward is that there are currently plans to expand Concord's universe in a non-game format. The upcoming animated anthology show Secret Level from Amazon actually features an episode based on Concord. Secret Level is premiering on December 10, so if Concord isn't back by then, one has to wonder what will happen with the episode.
