Firewalk Studios' Concord comes with 16 characters right off the bat. To make matters even more interesting, Sony PlayStation's new FPS title moves away from traditional characterization, choosing instead to slot its heroes into distinct types. Star Child, for example, is part of Concord's Breacher class, which can be understood as a role that falls between a classic tank and a DPS hero.

Star Child's design is another that has fueled the controversy of Concord being inspired from Overwatch, Star Wars, and Guardians of the Galaxy. Here, Star Child seems similar to Mauga from Overwatch 2 and Drax from Guardians of the Galaxy, based on his aggressive nature, brute strength, and character design. Moving past this, it cannot be understated how important the character can be on the battlefield, especially with the way his kit is structured. Here's everything that you need to know when it comes to playing Star Child on the battlefield.

How to Play Star Child in Concord

Concord Star Child Character Guide - Customization

Star Child is one of those in-your-face attackers in Concord, which means he's going to be important in any fight. His special abilities, Rage Rush and Power Slam, necessitate aggression, and players will need to go into enemy lines to take them out. Even if you don't manage to kill them yourself, the chaos you create and the space you open up will allow your teammates to get the upper hand.

If you wish to become a Star Child main in Concord, it's important to remember that you will need to be aggressive. The character is built for close-quarters combat, considering he only has shotguns and his abilities are meant for closing the distance. This also means that tensions will be high, and you will need your reflexes on point if you wish to make an impact on the field. Overall, you will need to be quick with decision-making, as well as develop strong knowledge of the maps, when to dive into the enemy lines, and who to target first.

Star Child's Abilities and Weapons, Explained

Class: Breacher

Star Child hails from the Breacher class. As part of Concord's Crew Bonus feature, characters in this class get a faster dodge cooldown: two seconds. This becomes especially important as Star Child gains Diamond Skin invincibility armor for the duration of the dodge animation.

Weapon: Skullbreaker Shotgun

Star Child is a very aggressive character, and his Skullbreaker Shotgun is one of the reasons why. It comes with six bullets per round and is naturally meant for close-quarters combat. Fortunately, what it loses in range, it makes up for in firepower.

Active Abilities

  • Rage Rush is akin to Overrun from Mauga's kit in Overwatch 2. Star Child rushes forward and can end the run with a melee slam at enemies. The important highlight is that while running, he gains Diamond Skin armor, which makes him invulnerable to damage.
  • Power Slam is a melee attack wherein Star Child slams the ground to do AoE damage around him. It is quite strong and can help whittle down enemies' health, while throwing them up in the air and messing with their aim. However, the damage radius is quite small and you will need to plan it right.

Passive Abilities

  • Diamond Skin is the starry purple armor that Star Child gets during Rage Rush, Power Slam, and dodging in Concord. When it's on, the hero is invulnerable to damage.
  • Berserker: All active abilities get an instant cooldown when Star Child gets a kill. This is great for chaining attacks if you can prioritize squishy targets in a group,

Combat Trait: Diamond Dodge

This Combat Trait gives Star Child the Diamond Skin armor while the dodge animation is on. Since the cooldown is only two seconds, this can be handy in making escapes or closing the distance to get a kill.

Star Child's Movement Mechanics, Explained

Concord Star Child Character Guide - Movement mechanics

Star Child comes with three movement mechanics in Concord:

  • Sprint
  • Double jump
  • Dodge

The character is not as agile as others, but he still moves at a decent pace when sprinting. When combined with Rage Rush, he becomes quite quick and is able to close distances while being protected to boot. For a fairly big and "brute" character, it was a surprise to see that Star Child has a dodge mechanic.

Daw is a medic, and the perfect kind of healer for a game like Concord where each character can hold their own.

He also has a double jump, which adds another layer of mobility to his kit. While this is not as beneficial as something like Roka's triple jump, it is still quite helpful in getting on top of containers or gaining access to map sections that may otherwise need a longer route. For example, Concord's Anchor class character, 1-Off, only has access to the single jump mechanic, which can be difficult to work with.

Gameplay Strategies and Tips for Star Child in Concord

Watch Out for Aerial and Long-Distance Attackers

Star Child is a strong and assertive attacker, but one of his weaknesses is that he has no impact on long-range targets. His shotguns have a steep fall-off range, and Rage Rush can end before you reach the enemy. This means that snipers like Vale are great counters for Star Child, and players will need to be cautious of them. These players can do great damage and are fairly agile themselves, and you will need to move from cover-to-cover to protect yourself.

In the same vein, Concord's aerial characters like the rockeeter Roka are also counters to him, as they can easily stay out of Star Child's reach. They cannot remain in the air indefinitely, but even that good length of time is enough for them to take you out. Furthermore, the height advantage also allows them to perch on stacked containers or move to vents or other areas from where they can still target you.

Use Rage Rush and Power Slam in Order for Most Impact

Rage Rush gives you sufficient brute melee strength during the run, and you even shove enemies at the end. You can also use Power Slam to end this, but using them one after another has shown better potential right now. With these two, you will almost always bring down most of Concord's "squishy" characters like Lennox, Vale, and Lark to about 1/4 health.

Concord: How To Use Variants

Changing Variants in Concord will change the Combat Trait of a Freegunner, and this can have a massive impact in matches.

Going in order will help you better gauge where Power Slam would be most apt. Often, a well-timed rush can end an enemy and show you who's more vulnerable. And then, all that's left is a bullet or two.

Focus on Berserker Ability Refresh

Use Rage Rush and Power Slam to disrupt a single enemy or a group, and go for who has the lowest health. Generally, targeting characters like Concord's Warden class' Lennox or Tactician's Lark, who don't have the best movement mechanics and come with lower HP, will ensure you get at least one kill. Then, once your cooldown is refreshed, get into another Rage Rush right away and either go in for more kills or retreat to safety.

It may seem tempting to prioritize big targets like 1-Off and Emari, but it's possible that you will get taken down before you kill them. Most often, this can happen because of the higher defense they have or the damaging power their teammates bring. To solve this, it's important that you finish off at least one or two characters rather than do some damage to all characters. Not only will they just get healed up, but you will also be out of the fight and your team a point down. Overall, Star Child is a strong Breacher character in Concord, but you will still need to strategize carefully to bring out his potential.
