Remedy Entertainment has released a new console update for Control: Ultimate Edition. This is essentially the same Control: Ultimate Edition update released for PC users earlier this year, but it’s finally available for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, too.

Pushing an enemy with telekinesis in Control

Control was originally released for PC, PS4, and Xbox One back in 2019. At the time, Control received positive reviews from critics, and its success led to the launch of Control: Ultimate Edition in 2020, which compiled the “Foundation” and “AWE” expansions into the base game. By June 2025, Control has already sold over 5 million units, and it has a sequel in the works.

As Alan Wake and Control bleed into each other's worlds, the next entries in both series are bound to kick the weirdness into overdrive.

Now, the free Control: Ultimate Edition update that was made available for PC back in March is finally ready for consoles. One of the most interesting additions of the free update is that three formerly pre-order exclusive outfits will now be available for all players: the Astral Dive Suit, Tactical Response Gear, and the Urban Response Gear. Also, all players will receive a new mission from Dr. Yoshiumi Tokui’s Guided Imagery Experience, which features a voiceover by Hideo Kojima and was previously exclusive to the PlayStation 4 Digital Deluxe version of Control.

Using debris to block gunfire in Control

Apart from adding new content, the Control: Ultimate Edition patch also makes some important general and graphical improvements to the title on the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Both platforms have improved the sorting of character and weapon mods, and added features such as “Unlock Frame Rate,” as well as VRR and 120Hz display support. The new update also introduces HDR support to Control: Ultimate Edition on consoles and improves Temporal Anti-Aliasing on the PS5. Additionally, the PS5 Pro received exclusive improvements to textures, shadow resolution filtering, PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution support, and more.

The Hiss

The free update is an excellent opportunity for gamers who have not tried Control or have not yet finished the title to return to it and play the best version of the action-adventure on console. Also, it’s a way for gamers to pass the time until Remedy Entertainment finally releases Control 2. Reports from earlier this year indicate that Control 2 is being developed with a smaller budget than Alan Wake 2, but Remedy still expects to provide a high-quality experience. With a reported budget of around $58 million, the developer intends to become profitable more quickly from the upcoming project, as, despite all the critical acclaim that the title received, Alan Wake 2 took a long time to make money.
