Best known for their Ratchet & Clank games, along with starting the Spyro series, Insomniac Games made a name for themselves with platformers that the whole family could enjoy. Then, in 2018, they debuted their first Marvel game with Marvel’s Spider-Man, which has since blossomed into a trilogy.

Best Marvel Games For Feeling Like Wolverine

Wolverine has sliced and diced his way through many Marvel adventures, but these games make you feel like the X-Men hero.

In 2021, they dropped another big bombshell, announcing they were working on a Wolverine game too. Besides that 2021 teaser trailer, fans have been in the dark for years. Finally, Insomniac Games returned with a better look at Marvel’s Wolverine during PlayStation's September State of Play, and it looks like exactly what fans have been craving since X-Men Origins: Wolverine launched in 2009. Here are some confirmed features to get excited about.

Marvel’s Mortal Kombat

The Blood Content Is Wild

The most striking aspect of the combat is its bloodiness. The trailer began with a bloody Wolverine, which was already more gruesome than what Insomniac Games had shown in their Spider-Man games, but things only got more gruesome from there. Wolverine’s claws are deadly, which is something the movies never got quite right until Logan and Deadpool & Wolverine. Showcasing the blood and gore content proved to fans that Insomniac knows what Wolverine is all about.

From stabbing enemies in the chest to lopping off their arms to puncturing their skulls, the trailer did not hold back. Some of the death animations looked like they came from a Mortal Kombat game. Alternatively, perhaps Insomniac took note of their fellow Sony developer, Santa Monica Studio, and their God of War series. Either way, the combat looks like a bloody good time in Marvel’s Wolverine.

Marvel’s Uncharted

Packed With Adventure

All three Spider-Man games from Insomniac are open-world action games set in parts of New York City. As fun as it would be to experience an open-world game as Wolverine, it’s also refreshing to see that Marvel’s Wolverine is not quite like that. In fact, it seems like the game is more of an action-adventure game akin to Uncharted. Uncharted’s developer, Naughty Dog, is currently busy with Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, along with possibly planning another game in The Last of Us series.

As such, Marvel’s Wolverine may be the next best thing to a new Uncharted or even a new Tomb Raider. The trailer showed Wolverine running and sliding on a rooftop, presumably while fleeing from enemies. There was a motorcycle chase scene, meaning there’s at least one driving section. Both of these elements were also in one of the most striking sequences in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. Finally, there was a moment where Wolverine dug his claws into a cliffside to stop himself from falling, which could point to a climbing mechanic.

There Will Be Multiple Regions To Explore

From The Wilderness To The City

There are two distinct sections in the trailer where it is easy to deduce where they take place within Marvel comics and the MCU. After the trailer, there was a quick behind-the-scenes video that mentioned three areas that can be explored. One was not in the trailer, Japan, which Wolverine fans know is a big location for some of the character's best comic stories.

The snowy areas in the trailer were set in the Canadian wilderness, which was featured in some of the X-Men movies and is where Logan is originally from. Finally, a lot of the city sections took place in Madripoor, which is a famous fictional city in Marvel comics and the MCU. Being able to explore multiple regions is one of the coolest features of Marvel’s Wolverine, as that means no one environment will ever get stale. Hopefully, more locations will be in the game, too, like Professor Xavier’s school.

Wolverine Sports His Classic Yellow

Among Other Costumes

Despite some flaws, the first two X-Men movies are still seen as pretty decent superhero films. One thing fans didn’t enjoy was the Matrix-like design of the superhero suits, which were all made up of uniform leather. That’s why fans were so ecstatic to see Wolverine sport his classic yellow outfit in 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine. Fans will be relieved to see that the yellow suit returns in Marvel’s Wolverine.

That’s the one superhero costume Wolverine can be seen wearing in the trailer, but there are two other costumes as well. Wolverine is in plaid and a cowboy hat during some of the Madripoor sections, and he is sporting a leather jacket in the forest scenes. Insomniac Games stuffed their Spider-Man games with dozens of suits for Peter and Miles to wear, meaning fans will be expecting the same treatment in Marvel’s Wolverine. It’s not a guarantee, but at least there’s some confirmed cosmetic variety so far.

Hitting Familiar Notes

Who Will Show Up Next?

Beyond Wolverine, there are three other iconic X-Men characters in the trailer. First, it seems like Omega Red will be one of the villains directly fighting Wolverine. He’s a bit of an obscure character from the broader Marvel universe beyond the comics, but he has previously appeared in some games, like Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes. Another character, Mystique, is someone fans should be more familiar with.

She’s appeared in various forms in most of the X-Men movies, along with being playable in a lot of games like Lego Marvel Super Heroes. Lastly, Wolverine can be seen facing a Sentinel, which is not a singular character, but more like a recurring enemy type that the X-Men have faced off against. While no gameplay was shown, it would be cool if players got to scale the Sentinel in Marvel’s Wolverine, like players got to do with the bosses in Shadow of the Colossus. It’s safe to assume more X-Men heroes and villains will appear in the final game as well.
