It seems that the season will explore the consequences of Gi-hun's failed uprising, as well as the other players being pitted against each other in a final showdown.

Squid Game's Season 3 Preview Gives Fans A Glimpse At What Will Happen Next

Who Will Be Returning?

In the preview for season 3 of Squid Game, fans get a glimpse of all the characters who survived from season 2. This includes Gi-hun, Jun-ho, Jun-hee, Myung-gi, Dae-ho, Hyun-ju, Geum-ja, and more. We also see the characters participating in a new game that requires them to receive a random plastic ball from a machine, showing that they will be pitted against each other in two separate teams. A few previous games are returning as well, seemingly requiring Gi-hun to relive even more past trauma from the games.

Outside of the big picture, however, we also get a few shots of characters carrying out unexpected actions, possibly showing a change of heart for some. This includes the Front Man, who has a short clip of him seemingly with tears in his eyes, which could possibly imply that something will happen to his brother Jun-ho, or that he is experiencing a change of heart. We also see Jun-hee tearing up, as well as the sound of a baby, which could mean that she will give birth during the games. All of these small and short shots give us an idea as to what is to come, but could also give us a hint towards the future of the Squid Game franchise.

Is There More To Come?

Though Season 3 will give a decent amount of screen time to the remaining supporting characters, there's also a chance that the show could be setting fans up for the next generation of Squid Game, possibly even leading to a prequel of the series. In particular, the character of Hwang In-ho, also known as the Front Man, has a lot left to be explored that would be difficult to fit into the six remaining episodes of the series. This would include his history with his family, including his parents and his brother, Jun-ho, and his relationship with his wife, who tragically passed away. There is still not a lot known about his previous role as a police officer, and his experience during the Squid Games back in 2015.

Season 3 seems much too short to be able to explore all of these possibilities, so a prequel appearing in the future isn't completely out of the question. Though Gi-hun plays a major role in the possible deterioration of the Games, there is still a lot left to learn about the creation of the Games and how they continued to function for many years without any interference by the police. Should the creator of Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk, choose to continue the franchise and expand its world, there are many stories he could focus on, especially the history of In-ho and even the first Squid Game ever and its inception.

How Likely Is a Prequel?

While there's no way to fully know if Squid Game will be expanded into more shows or even films, there is still a slight possibility that a prequel could be created, or the franchise is not fully over yet. In an interview, the creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, implied that he would consider returning to Squid Game after the third season is complete, possibly creating a spinoff. He has said that it "would be about different characters with a different story arc. Some kind of spinoff, maybe. For example, the masked guards. How did they end up here? What do they do in their downtime? Something like that, maybe."

This is a good sign for those who are looking for more Squid Game content and don't want to see the series come to a complete end just yet. While Hwang Dong-hyuk certainly seems up for keeping the franchise alive, it is likely that new Squid Game content will not be arriving for quite some time, so fans would likely have to wait a while before they see more.

Although there is no confirmed prequel or spinoff for Squid Game just yet, fans can look forward to season 3 being released on June 27, 2025, with a possible total of six episodes being featured. After the preview was released, it is clear that the final season will be explosive and with a lot of possible betrayals and switch-ups, leading to some of the most thrilling sequences fans have seen in the series yet. The excitement around Squid Game is not over just yet, and there is a lot left to experience.
