Summary

  • Crash Team Rumble will turn off microtransactions in the final update on March 4.
  • Toys for Bob is no longer developing the game, but Activision will maintain servers.
  • The final update introduces a free 500-tier battle pass with previous season content included.

Crash Team Rumble will be turning off its microtransactions once a new content update launches on March 4, but this update will also mark the end of support for the online multiplayer game. The game will also undergo some major changes, since Crash Team Rumble developer Toys for Bob is no longer working on the game.

Revealed at The Game Awards 2022, Crash Team Rumble is an online 4v4 multiplayer game developed by Toys for Bob, a studio synonymous with developing the Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon franchises. Players may team up as their favorite Crash Bandicoot characters, collect coveted Wumpa Fruit, and battle against others in a strategic platforming environment. Each character has a unique set of skills and abilities, and roster members are divided into Blocker, Booster, and Scorer roles. Crash Team Rumble received new playable characters, modes, and so much more in the past eight months, but content updates will cease entirely with the final content update on March 4.

As reported by IGN and video game historian Liam Robertson, a new in-game notification for Crash Team Rumble confirms the final content update on March 4 will remove microtransactions and end post-launch support. The game's final update will introduce a free 500-tier battle pass that includes 104 new items. What's more, this massive battle pass will also include all the battle pass content from previous Crash Team Rumble seasons, alongside all the available event rewards. Fortunately, this change means that newcomers and Crash Team Rumble veterans can enjoy the game and continue to unlock rewards as long as the servers are active. Any remaining Crash Coins, Crash Team Rumble's in-game currency, may be used to purchase tier skips and immediately unlock rewards from the battle pass.

Crash Team Rumble Will Turn Off Microtransactions in a Final Update

This announcement was made as Toys for Bobs confirmed its split from Activision to become an independent studio. Although Toys for Bob is no longer working on Crash Team Rumble, Activision will continue to maintain the game's servers after the update arrives on March 4. Currently, Toys for Bob is "exploring" a potential partnership with Microsoft, with both Microsoft and Activision expressing support for the studio's transition as an indie developer.

Although Toys for Bob is leaving Crash Team Rumble behind, the studio's future holds a lot of potential. In addition, the studio may recover from the recent Microsoft layoffs that caused the Crash Bandicoot series developers to downsize. If Toys for Bobs is hired for a new project from Microsoft, it could be an opportunity for former employees and newer developers alike.
