Critical Role just announced it will be running a special charity one-shot Dungeons and Dragons campaign on January 30 to raise funds for the people affected by the recent fires in Los Angeles. Fans of the Dungeons and Dragons actual play stream can donate money to multiple charities while also voting for monsters, hazards, and other surprising twists for the Critical Role cast to encounter during the special show.
The recent fires in Los Angeles have devastated countless citizens, with entire communities losing their homes and livelihoods in the blaze. In response to the tragedy, Critical Role skipped its weekly episode on January 9 to give both the cast and community time to recover from the incident, while also donating $30,000 to the California Community Foundation Wildfire Recovery Fund.
Dungeons and Dragons' 2025 Monster Manual Can Turn a Big Tradition on Its Head
The 2025 Monster Manual will feature many monsters that return from previous editions, but a new addition could rival the game's most formidable foe.
Now, Critical Role is taking another big step towards helping the fire relief efforts in Los Angeles. The actual play group just announced a special, non-canon one-shot featuring the Bells Hells adventuring group from Campaign 3 will take place on Thursday, January 30. From now until the end of the special episode beginning at its normal time at 7 PM PST on Twitch, YouTube, and Beacon – Critical Role’s own streaming service – fans who donate to this charity drive can cast votes on which monsters, hazards, and other twists Bells Hells will encounter on their adventure.
Critical Role LA Fire Relief One-Shot on January 30
Those who vote will be able to conjure cataclysmic spells like Sickening Radiance, Maelstrom, Insect Plague, and even Meteor Swarm at the Critical Role cast by donating funds, and can throw terrifying monsters like the Froghemoth, Tyrannosaurus Rex, and even Ira Wendagoth, the Nightmare King, at the party. Donation milestones include other fun complications, such as a “Freaky Thursday” body swap, random inconvenient teleportation, or the summoning of extra allies or enemies during the show. The first five fans to donate $5,000 can even submit their own characters to appear during the game, played by none other than Critical Role GM and voice actor Matt Mercer.
Though the one-shot takes place on January 30, the charity drive will continue raising funds all the way through February 28. Outside administration fees and a 10% emergency fund allocation, the rest of the money raised will be evenly split between the California Community Foundation Wildfire Recovery Fund, the Latino Community Foundation, and the LA Fire Department Foundation.
As previously planned, Critical Role will return to its normal game on February 6 as Campaign 3 rapidly approaches its conclusion. Fans will have to see what Critical Role announces next once the story of the Bells Hells reaches an end.
