Summary
- Croc: Legend of the Gobbos is getting a remaster.
- The 3D platformer features Croc on a journey to save Gobbos from Baron Dante.
- Argonaut Games is coming back to release the Croc remaster.
The classic 90s platformer Croc: Legend of the Gobbos is getting a remaster after developer Argonaut Games teased the game, though there is still no specific release date as of now. There is no information yet about what systems the game may come out on, though it is known mostly for its original PlayStation version, so it seems likely that the Croc: Legend of the Gobbos remaster will at least make it to the PS5.
Released in 1997 on the PS1, Sega Saturn, and PC, Croc: Legend of the Gobbos is a 3D platformer akin to the iconic Spyro the Dragon, which sees players control the titular baby crocodile on a platforming adventure. Along the way, players are tasked with navigating unique platforming levels and collecting gems while they journey to rescue a race of furry creatures called Gobbos from the evil Baron Dante.
Suikoden Remaster Collection Finally Has a Release Date
After a delay, Konami announces the release date for the Suikoden Remaster Collection, along with the addition of new platforms.
Developer Argonaut Games recently posted a trailer to its official YouTube channel, showcasing some gameplay segments showing Croc navigating obstacles while setting up the game's plot. The trailer shows Croc fighting off various enemies, such as a giant worm and a huge ladybug in a boxing ring while exploring levels and gathering collectibles like in the N64 classic Banjo-Kazooie.
Croc: Legend of the Gobbos Gets New Life on Modern Consoles
Argonaut Games began as a small studio in 1982 that later went on to make the original Star Fox on the Super Nintendo before moving on to the PlayStation and Sega Saturn with the Croc series. The company later went out of business in 2007 after several years of liquidation, only to come back from dormancy in full force to announce the upcoming Croc remaster.
It is unclear what kinds of improvements may come with the Croc re-release, since the trailer doesn't say much about potential visual upgrades or new features that may be on the way. In any case, though, it appears to be a more low-key remaster rather than a full-on remake in the vein of the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, which might make sense for a developer coming back from obscurity for the first time in 17 years.
Croc: Legend of the Gobbos was originally followed up with a sequel in 1999 with Croc 2, which took the series further in much the same direction with its platforming gameplay and a familiar storyline. Croc 2 was released as a PS1 console exclusive, not including the much different Game Boy port, though there are no known plans to remaster the sequel at this time.
