Cronos: The New Dawn is scheduled to get a physical release on PlayStation 5 and Switch 2, but only the former platform will get copies that actually contain game data. As the gaming industry continues to transition from physical to digital, more developers have either been ditching physical launches entirely or only doing it on certain platforms, as can be seen in the case of Cronos: The New Dawn.
Following 2024's massive hit Silent Hill 2, Bloober Team put itself on the map as a serious horror developer. The remake sold more than a million units in its first three days, marking the first resounding success for Konami's franchise in a decade. Continuing its legacy of horror titles, which includes releases such as Layers of Fear and Observer, the Polish studio unveiled Cronos: The New Dawn, an upcoming third-person survival horror game, in November 2024. During last month's Nintendo Direct, the game was finally confirmed to be hitting shelves on September 5.
Silent Hill, Cronos: The New Dawn Paint a Clear Picture of Bloober’s Future
After the Silent Hill 2 remake, Bloober Team has Cronos: The New Dawn in the pipeline, and it could cement the developer's future.
Cronos: The New Dawn to Only Get a True Physical Release on PS5
Apart from rolling out digitally across PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo platforms, Cronos: The New Dawn will get physical editions on PS5 and Switch 2. However, it turns out that only Sony's system will be getting a true physical release, with the game being present on the disc itself. In the case of the Switch 2, the physical edition will be a Game-Key card, which is essentially a cartridge holding only the license for the purchased title and no game data. On the other hand, for Xbox, the sci-fi shooter is not planned to get any kind of physical launch at all. Besides the base game, both physical editions come with bonus in-game content and some stickers. All versions of the game are currently up for pre-order at various retailers.
Bloober Team going for the Game-Key card on Switch 2 and not bothering with a physical release on Xbox shows a growing pattern in an industry that seems to be swiftly moving towards what may eventually be a digital-only future. While many devs still offer full physical releases on PlayStation, the Xbox ports often come with partial game data and require additional downloads before playing. The emergence of Nintendo's Game-Key cards this generation has further made life difficult for gamers who prefer collecting physical copies. It will be interesting to see if the potential introduction of new Switch 2 card storage sizes changes that in the future.
Cronos: The New Dawn won't be the only major horror title releasing in September. Konami's Silent Hill f looks poised to wrap up what appears to be an excellent month for fans of the popular genre, with the game slated to launch on September 25.
