3 Monogatari Series: First Season

There isn’t really anything out there like Nisio Isin’s Monogatari series. The series is a mixture of supernatural and mystery tropes, with a strong focus on psychological elements and character development, which, paired with Shaft’s unique style and aesthetic, help it stand out as a true one-of-a-kind anime experience.
The story follows the life of Koyomi Araragi, a high school student who, after having become a vampire over spring break, is drawn into the world of the occult where he meets and aids others affected by similar supernatural afflictions. With a strong focus on dialogue and character development, the Monogatari series might not be for everyone. But anyone wanting to try something different may want to give this one a shot.
What’s considered to be the “First Season” is actually three different series: the 15-episode Bakemonogatari, the 11-episode Nisemonogatari, and the 4-episode Nekomonogatari (Black). If split evenly over the weekend, this can be an easy watch. And if you really like it, the “Second Season” is a great place to pick things up again next weekend.

At one point in time, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya stood as a cultural phenomenon akin to something like Attack on Titan or Jujutsu Kaisen today. The series was everywhere you looked online, attracting massive amounts of fans both in Japan and around the world.
Told through the perspective of high school student Kyon, the series follows the adventures of the eponymous Haruhi Suzumiya, a headstrong girl obsessed with the paranormal. Roped into joining her after-school club (dubbed the SOS Brigade) Kyon finds himself caught up in a suddenly eventful school life while also trying to find out more about the various mysteries that surround Haruhi.
Newer anime fans might’ve never heard of it, but for many, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is one of the standout anime of the 2000s. It’s a great blend of comedy and slice-of-life, with a unique sci-fi twist that ties everything together. If you’ve had this on your watchlist for a while, or if you’re just hearing of it now, why not give it a look and see what all the hype is about?

Runtime |
26 hours 24 minutes |
In a sea of Isekai anime happy to rely on overused tropes and plot points, Re:Zero stands out for its subversive storytelling, high stakes, and dark twists and turns. It’s safe to say that Re:Zero is one of the most successful modern light novel series, with a variety of manga and video game spin-offs to accompany the novel alongside the popular anime adaptation.
After disappearing in the real world, 17-year-old shut-in Subaru Natsuki finds himself in the fantastical Kingdom of Lugunica. There, he meets and dies trying to protect a half-elf named Emilia, who is a candidate to become the kingdom’s next monarch. Subaru revives a few hours before his death, kicking off a devastating loop of trial-and-error. With this strange and horrible power in hand, Subaru takes it upon himself to accompany Emilia on her journey to become the kingdom’s next queen.
With a whopping 66 episodes, Re:Zero is a lengthy watch. But it should be plenty bingeable over the course of the weekend. Season 3 wrapped up earlier this year, and with season 4 slated to release sometime in 2026, now is as good a time as any to get started with the series.
