Fall might be the season most associated with horror in the Western world, but in Japan, it's the summer that has people thinking of ghost stories and supernatural phenomena. Why not spend your weekend watching one of the best horror anime Crunchyroll has to offer?

Based on the novel by Yukito Ayatsuji, the same author of the critically acclaimed Decagon House Murders, Another is a perfect mix of horror and mystery. After transferring into Class 3-3, Koichi Sakakibara becomes acquainted with Mei Misaki, a girl who the rest of his classmates and even their teacher shun and ignore as part of some bizarre superstition. When the students of Class 3-3 and their relatives begin dying in horrible ways, Koichi and Mei set out to discover the truth behind a tragedy that occurred 26 years prior in the hopes of uncovering the cause of these strange deaths.

Another is a fairly short series at 12 episodes. It’s an easy anime to binge, but there are enough twists and turns to keep you hooked from one episode to the next. If you’re a fan of horror and want to try your hand at solving a supernatural mystery this weekend, this is the anime for you.

If rom-coms are more your thing, Crunchyroll certainly has tons to choose from. If you’re looking for something a little different than the rest this weekend, then Kaguya-sama: Love Is War might be just what you’re looking for.

The series follows student council president Miyuki Shirogane and vice-president Kaguya Shinomiya. Both are well-regarded at their prestigious high school, and many consider the two to be the perfect match. Though the two of them do like each other, they’re both too stubborn to make the first move. Instead, both engage in various schemes to try to get the other to confess first.

Kaguya-sama is a great twist on the romance genre, adding in psychological elements that make it a one-of-a-kind watch. With 37 episodes and even a movie, this is going to be a bit of a commitment this weekend. But if you’re looking for a fun series with some stellar character development, it’s worth the time.

There are tons of weird anime out there that really make you appreciate just how willing mangaka and studios are to try out unorthodox ideas. Even among the most unique series out there, Hetalia stands on its own.

Hetalia follows human versions of World War II-era countries, mainly focusing on Northern Italy, Germany, and Japan, as well as the Allied Forces; America, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, China, and Canada. The series plays on different stereotypes for each country, parodying various cultural and political generalizations.

Hetalia episodes are usually around 5 minutes long, and while there are a lot of them, the short runtime makes this one of the easier series on Crunchyroll to breeze through. As with any anime, both the dub and sub have their strengths, but the extra effort that the dub voice actors put into making each country’s accent might elevate it for some.

When it first came out in 2016, ERASED was one of the biggest anime around, winning over fans with its incredible characters and a mystery that had people tuning in every week to find out more. Almost 10 years later, the series doesn’t get nearly enough love.

ERASED follows 29-year-old Satoru Fujinuma, who, after finding his mother murdered in his home is sent back 18 years into the past. Now intent on saving his mother, Satoru also sets out to prevent the abduction and murder of one of his childhood classmates.

ERASED is a perfect mystery thriller to binge over the weekend. There are some incredible emotional moments between Satoru and the classmate he’s trying to save, Kayo Hinazuki, that really get the viewer invested in how things will turn out for them. It might not be in the spotlight after all these years, but ERASED is still a great watch.

The legendary Satoshi Kon is known for directing what many consider to be some of the best anime films of the last quarter-century. Though his work on films such as Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, and Paprika earned him worldwide acclaim, Paranoia Agent might just be his most overlooked project.

When overworked character designer Tsukiko Sagi is attacked on her way home, detectives Keiichi Ikari and Mitsuhiro Maniwa are assigned to the case. Initially suspecting that Tsukiko lied due to issues at work, word of a second attack sends the two after a mysterious assailant dubbed Lil' Slugger. As Lil' Slugger assaults various people around Tokyo, the only things the victims can remember about him are his golden inline skates, that he wears a baseball cap, and that he uses a bent golden baseball bat as a weapon.

Paranoia Agent is up there with Kon’s best work, featuring the director’s signature blend of psychological thriller and mystery elements. If you’re a fan of Kon’s other works, or if you’re just looking for something unique to check out this weekend, this is the anime for you.
