Schemes in Crusader Kings 3 have been completely reworked, adding more depth and giving players more agency. So how do schemes work now in CK3?
Detached from land and permanent titles, players are encouraged to focus on gaining temporary Governorships for their families, which translates into usable power. To gain true influence over an Empire, even from the shadows, players will want to become Powerful Families in CK3, and eventually the Dominant Family.

What Are Powerful Families In Crusader Kings 3
In Administrative realms such as the Byzantine Empire, Powerful Families are the most influential and benefit from a specific Family Attribute. This Attribute has 2 parts, and the head of the house can change it at any time:
- A benefit to their liege (Emperor), such as +5% Army Damage.
- A benefit to all House Members of the Powerful Family, such as +5 Advantage and +10% Men-at-Arms Damage.
There can only be 5 Powerful Families at one time, although the Emperor's family is always one, so technically there are six.
How To Increase The Powerful Family Rating
By opening the Administrative Government menu on the right, players can click on the Noble Families tab, and see the current rankings. Within the House coat-of-arms is a number that represents the Powerful Family Rating. Hovering over this Rating will show a detailed breakdown.
How To Make Money As A Landless Adventurer In Crusader Kings 3
The Roads to Power DLC for Crusader Kings 3 Allows Players To Roam The Map As A Landless Adventurer, and there are many ways to earn gold.
The following modifiers contribute to this Rating and knowing these will help players become a Powerful Family in CK3.
- Living House Members in Realm.
- Landed House Members.
- Number of held Governorships.
- House Head's Level of Influence.
- House Members of Emperor's Council.
- Estate is located in Capital.
- Estate Buildings.
- Heart of the Family (Diplomacy Perk)
If the Head of House is not of the State Faith, this will inflict a loss in Rating.
With the most powerful of these being Landed House Members and Governorships Held, players will need to know how to gain and leverage Influence in Roads to Power to get more of their family appointed to high positions.
How To Become A Dominant Family In Roads To Power For CK3
Becoming a Dominant Family in Roads to Power is a little more difficult, and is therefore rewarded with one of the 158 Achievements in Crusader Kings 3. The advantage of being a Dominant Family is that the Emperor does not receive the bonuses of your Powerful Family Attribute. This can help a Dominant Family overthrow their liege.
Crusader Kings 3: 10 New Things Added With The Roads To Power DLC
The Roads to Power DLC brings with it a variety of new features for Crusader Kings 3 players to enjoy.
To be considered a Dominant Family within an Administrative Empire, a House must control 25% of the Realm. This is achieved by getting family members appointed to Governorships and keeping them in Power. Influence, Gold, Prestige, and Schemes will all be key in achieving this.
