When a ruler dies in Crusader Kings 3, players will typically continue as their heir, as long as they have one. To continue conquering, residing over peace, or stockpiling vast piles of gold, players will therefore want to have the best heirs, and while luck certainly plays its part, there are plenty of ways to get better heirs in CK3.

How To Give Your Heir The Best Genetics In CK3

Crusader Kings 3 - How To Get The Best Heirs

Part of getting the best heirs in Crusader Kings 3 is setting them up for life with the best genetics, which results in the best Congenital Traits, such as Beautiful, Genius, and Herculean. These provide stat bonuses, increase opinions, and in the case of the Genius or lesser intelligence Traits, increase Monthly Lifestyle Experience gains.

As Congenital Traits can be inherited, the best advice is to marry a spouse with some of these Traits. The Blood branch of Dynasty Legacies is also great for this, with certain Legacies increasing the chances of inheriting good Traits, and eventually players will be able to choose one Trait to become more common.

Some players use eugenics by switching to Faiths that allow marriage between family members. After a few generations, Congenital Traits will stay in the family.

How To Give Your Heir The Best Education & Personality Traits In CK3

Crusader Kings 3 Court Tutor

As children grow up in Crusader Kings 3, they will gain Personality Traits and sometimes additional stats or other bonuses. Upon turning 16, they will gain an Education Trait based on the quality of their education and other factors. Education Traits grant bonuses to Monthly Lifestyle Experience gains in one Lifestyle, such as Stewardship or Intrigue. This makes them incredibly important, as characters with high-tier Education Traits will unlock new Perks much faster.

To improve the education of children and heirs in CK3, there are a few things players can do.

  • You can change a child's Education Focus once to have them become better at a certain Lifestyle you wish to play as.
  • Consider being your heir's Guardian once they turn 6. This will allow you to shape their Personality Traits via random events, often at the cost of Stress, though.
  • Assign Guardians who are masters in the fields of your heir's Education Focus.
  • Assign Guardians with the Scholar Trait.
  • Hire a skilled Court Tutor and utilize their tasks.
  • Hire a skilled Wet Nurse and use the Instill Virtue tasks for children to possibly gain Virtuous Traits.
  • Send your child to University at the cost of lots of gold.
  • Make sure heirs accompany you on Activities to possibly give them Traits such as Traveler or Pilgrim.
  • Some Cultural Traditions increase the chances of gaining certain Personality Traits.

Ways To Change The Succession To Get Different Heirs In CK3

Crusader Kings 3 - Disinherit Heir

If players aren't happy with their current heir, there are thankfully a few ways to change the succession and have a different child inherit.

  • Murder: Characters can only murder their own children if they have the Sadistic Trait.
  • Have them die in war: An alternative to outright murder is to assign an heir as commander of an army and send them into an unfair fight.
  • Disinherit: By clicking on an heir while playing as the head of a dynasty, players can disinherit relatives from the succession. However, this costs lots of Prestige, Renown, and Legitimacy.
  • Absolute Crown Authority: This max-level law allows rulers to designate their heir.
  • Change the succession rules: Different succession rules allow for characters other than your eldest child to inherit, such as House Seniority or Elective rules.
  • Choose a new destiny: Upon death, players are now able to select other relatives to play as, but without inheriting the main title. Click on children to make them your favorite so that they are always one of the playable options.
