Raiding in Crusader Kings 3 is a form of warfare where gaining loot and damaging enemy buildings is the aim, without being at war. While it isn't available to everyone, raiding can be a key form of income, especially in the early game. Without war declared, there is less on the line, but players could still see their armies destroyed by an angry defensive force.
Crusader Kings 3: How Do Automated Armies Work?
Players are now able to let the computer control their armies in Crusader Kings 3, but how do automated armies work in CK3?
Who Can Raid & Raiding Requirements In Crusader Kings 3?
To be able to raid in CK3, certain requirements must be met. Thankfully, only one of the following is needed:
- Tribal Government
- Nomadic Government (Khans of the Steppe DLC)
- Frontier Administrative Vassals (Roads to Power DLC)
- Unreformed Faith
- Practiced Pirates Cultural Tradition
- Legacy of Piracy Dynasty Legacy
Additionally, rulers must not be at war as this will prevent them from switching armies into raid mode.
How To Raid In Crusader Kings 3
To raid in Crusader Kings 3, players need their soldiers to be set as a Raiding Army. This can be done when raising them; Raise Local Raiders, or players can click on their army and select the Start Raiding button in the menu in the bottom left.
Raiding Armies will be shown with burning torches above their banner.
With a Raiding Army selected and near an enemy border, players should see potential loot on the map above enemy holdings. These are targets for raiding.
To raid, simply move the Raiding Army into enemy territory onto one of these holdings. Once a raid begins, players should see the circle begin to fill up. Importantly, once a raid has begun, it cannot be canceled. Therefore, it is best to avoid raiding strong opponents, who will send their troops to defend.
Bring The Loot Back
After a successful raid, players will not see any gold gains or other loot. Instead, by hovering over the army, they can see how much loot is being carried.
Players will only receive this loot when the army returns to their lands. If the army is defeated in battle before returning, the loot will be lost.
Tips For Raiding In Crusader Kings 3
To get the most out of raiding in Crusader Kings 3 and bleed the surrounding lands dry, consider the following tips and niche features.
- Raiding cannot be turned off until an army returns home. Nor can they be split in enemy territory.
- Make sure to acquire Torch Bearers as Nomads to speed up raids.
- Some defensive buildings, such as Marches, can make raids much slower, so avoid these.
- Holdings cannot be raided again for 5 years after being attacked.
- Rulers leading raids may gain the option to sack a county or capture slaves.
- Nomads can improve raids with unique Dynasty Legacies or with domicile buildings.
- After leading 20 successful raids, the Raider or Viking Trait can be unlocked.
- Overseas raiding can only be done with the Longships or West African Canoes innovations.
- With the Northern Adventurers DLC, some Norse rulers may be given the option to trade when raiding.
- There is a toggle for always raiding. Turning this off can prevent angering a powerful enemy.

How To Change Raid Intents In Crusader Kings 3
Introduced alongside the Khans of the Steppe DLC, players can now set raid intents for their armies to gain different benefits from adventures.
To do so, click on the army and convert it to a Raiding Arm y if they aren't already in the bottom left. Next to the Always Raid checkbox, there is a pop-up menu for choosing Raid Intent. Just make sure to click Confirm upon making a change rather than exiting the menu.
Set Raid Intents before raiding, as it cannot be changed mid-siege.
Raid Intents can also be changed for all armies at the top of the Military tab on the right.
