Crytek has announced the previously in-development Crysis 4 has been put on hold while the studio plans to lay off 15% of its staff. The developer is famed for producing the first-person shooter Crysis series that debuted in 2007, following a group of nanosuited military protagonists opposing a host of powerful mercenaries and technologically advanced aliens called the Ceph. Crysis 4 succeeds three main entries, 2011’s Crysis 2 and 2013’s Crysis 3, alongside the 2008 expansion Crysis Warhead and the 2020 Crysis Remastered release.
Crytek is a German-based developer founded by the Yerli brothers, and the studio boasts its own game engine known as CryEngine to produce impressive open-world games, including Warhorse Studios’ Kingdom Come: Deliverance that utilizes a modern version of the engine. Crytek’s portfolio is impressive, primarily populated by the Crysis series and including the original Far Cry, Ryse: Son of Rome, and Hunt: Showdown. As of 2024, Crytek stood as the largest game developer in Germany with around 400 employees.
Canceled Crysis Next Gameplay Details Leak Online
A video of the canceled battle royale Crysis game, Crysis Next, leaks online, detailing the project and offering a look at early gameplay.
Posting on Twitter, the official Crytek account shared a message to the community outlining the studio’s immediate plans. The developer confirmed an approximate 15% of the estimated 400 employees in the affected development teams and shared services must be laid off, which means around 60 employees will be offered “severance packages and career assistance services.” The statement also confirmed development on Crysis 4 has been on hold since Q3 2024. Former Hitman 3 director Mattias Engström was brought on board Crysis 4 back in 2022, preceding a wave of new staff hires the following year.
Crytek Announces Layoffs and Puts Crysis 4 Development On Hold
The post explained Crytek “cannot continue as before and remain financially sustainable” while Hunt: Showdown 1896 continues to grow, and it was noted that the studio had orchestrated ongoing efforts to reduce costs and cut operating expenses before arriving at the “inevitable” decision to lay off staff. Hunt: Showdown 1896 recently welcomed Ghost Face to the roster, which has since become a popular addition within the fandom, and the studio appears fully committed to evolving the first-person shooter through this difficult period.
Crysis 4 was announced back in 2022, debuting with a trailer and gameplay details. Existing as a direct sequel to Crysis 3, the fourth installment will be a next-gen shooter, previously confirmed by Crytek CEO Avni Yerli, and expected to push the limitations of modern technology and hardware. While fans wait for Crysis 4 to get underway again, the Crysis Remastered Trilogy is currently up for grabs, boasting support for Deep Learning Super Sampling for PC users.
