The popularity of roguelike deckbuilders continues with Monster Train 2, which is officially launching on May 21. The sequel to Monster Train introduces new card types, Clans, enemies, and features, but with the same exciting gameplay mechanics that deckbuilder fans love. This time, Monster Train 2 is releasing a Cult of the Lamb collaboration featuring the game's quirky characters.

Similar to Monster Train 2, Cult of the Lamb is also a roguelike game that follows Lamb, who survives a sacrificial rite after striking a deal with an ominous figure, and sets out to build a cult to repay their debt. Players fight through hordes of enemies and powerful bosses in different dungeons, while also rescuing followers along the way. Cult of the Lamb may have a different tone to Monster Train 2, but recruiting the Cultists to the Legions of Hell actually makes sense.

How Cult of the Lamb Gave Cozy Game Grimoire Groves' Devs More Confidence

Cult of the Lamb's success gave Grimoire Groves' developers more confidence to create a cozy combat-free roguelike game.

Monster Train 2's Cult of the Lamb Collaboration Defies the Gods

The story of Monster Train 2 follows an alliance of angels and demons as they work together to take down the Titans that have seized control of Heaven. Players must navigate Hell, Heaven, and the Abyss to defeat the Titans and their forces, and they'll have to be strategic with how they play their cards to maximize their Clans' power. The previous Monster Train had strong Clans that could withstand any Seraph wave, and Monster Train 2 will likely deliver the same while facing the Titans, especially with the addition of Pyre Hearts to unlock new abilities.

In some ways, Cult of the Lamb fits perfectly with Monster Train 2's plot, as the Massive Monster-developed title also has an ongoing theme of defying higher beings. The main antagonists are known as the Bishops of the Old Faith, which is a powerful cult and the main religion in Cult of the Lamb's world. With Lamb building their own cult, the goal is to defeat the Bishops and convert them into devout followers. Taking down the Bishops also rewards Cult of the Lamb players with Fleeces and other cosmetics they can use in their encampment.

As mentioned, the Monster Train 2 and Cult of the Lamb collaboration allows players to summon Lamb's Cultists, who give random equipment to allies every time they're placed on the field. Monster Train 2 also teased that the source of the Cultists' powers comes from the Celestial Alcove, an expansion of the Rail that attracts new visitors from Hell and other worlds beyond. This would mean that Monster Train 2 might have more collaborations with other franchises in its pipeline. It's also said that the Celestial Alcove will have random events with exciting gameplay, which could help players obtain power-ups for their units and Clans.

New and Returning Features Coming to Monster Train 2

  • Pyre Hearts: Each Pyre Heart allows players to customize their runs.
  • Dimensional Challenges: A game mode that offers handcrafted challenges, new Mutators, and unique cosmetic rewards.
  • Train Customization: Players can unlock new parts to personalize their trains.
  • The Logbook: In addition to recording completion goals, the improved Logbook now includes new features, such as enemy information, collection objectives, and more ways to compare achievements against friends.
  • Daily Challenges: A chance to take on different challenges every day, and players can also compete globally to climb the leaderboards.
  • Celestial Alcoves: An expansion of the Rail that attracts new visitors to Hell, and also has a wide variety of random events with exciting gameplay.
  • Endless Mode: Players can travel the Rails with increasing difficulty to test out their skills and survive as long as they can in this game mode.

The Cult of the Lamb crossover is just one of potentially many other future collaborations that Monster Train 2 will have. What's great is that fans will get to enjoy the Cult of the Lamb features upon launch in May, so they can strategize their movements and attacks with the help of the Cultists. Meanwhile, gamers can play the first Monster Train to brush up on Artifacts, card functions, and other gameplay elements that might prove useful in the sequel.
