Summary

  • Yorkshire Tea has collaborated with designer POPeART to create custom controllers for PlayStation and Xbox, featuring the iconic Yorkshire Tea photo found on its packaging.
  • These limited edition controllers are priced at £150 or around $190, more than twice the cost of a regular PlayStation DualSense or an Xbox wireless controller.
  • Despite the high price point, these controllers have the potential to become collector's items in the future, as rare gaming items can fetch high prices at auction years later.

PlayStation and Xbox fans can get new custom controllers just in time for Christmas thanks to a surprising collaboration between a beloved British staple, Yorkshire Tea, and POPeART, a designer. While it is an unusual collaboration, team-ups like this have happened in the past with other companies, such as Xbox partnering with Marvel to release a Doctor Strange-themed console, and even Butterfinger, the peanut butter chocolate bar, also getting in on the fun.

Since the release of the current generation consoles, even celebrities like the NBA superstar Lebron James have been teaming up to release customized PS5 consoles and controllers. These pieces of hardware are usually released in limited quantities, which can result in them becoming collector’s items down the years and even fetching quite a sum at auction. Recently, a rare Nintendo 64 controller, the Foxdata Chrome Leopard, of which it is averaged that only 200 were made and released exclusively in the UK, was estimated to sell for over $1200. So, these custom controllers do have a market, even if it is 25 years later.

Over on Twitter, Yorkshire Tea announced that they were selling controllers for the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X and S on the company’s official website, Little Shop of Proper. Both controllers are in limited supply and feature the iconic Yorkshire Tea photo found on its packaging. For the PlayStation DualSense, the image is on the handles, with the logo appearing on the touchpad, while for the Xbox wireless controller, the photo covers the left half with the logo on the right. The price of these controllers is a little steep and will cost players £150 or around $190, which is more than twice the cost of a regular PlayStation DualSense or an Xbox wireless controller.

Yorkshire Tea has acknowledged the high price point on Twitter while apologizing for the controllers not being cheaper. According to the brewers, the original idea was to make just one for marketing purposes after POPeART, a “controller designer extraordinaire,” approached the company on social media. While there is currently a limited number of the Xbox and PlayStation controllers, Yorkshire Tea said the company is looking to restock them in the future.

There is no doubt that gamers love to collect rare items, especially Xbox controllers, because they are some of the most unique because of all the color variants and patterns. For fans who love a good cup of tea and gaming, the Yorkshire Tea controller is a must-have collector’s item.
