Cyberpunk 2077’s sequel has officially entered pre-production, as confirmed by developer CD Projekt Red itself. While Cyberpunk 2077’s initial 2020 launch was fraught with game-breaking bugs and glitches that cast the sci-fi RPG in a bad light, CDPR slowly went to work correcting the course through many fixes and update patches. This eventually culminated in 2023’s Phantom Liberty DLC. By the time all of this was finished, Cyberpunk 2077 went from being one of the most poorly received games of the modern era to a breakout success, and fans have been left eager for a sequel.
That sequel would eventually be confirmed by CD Projekt Red in October 2022, under the tentative codename “Project Orion.” Little of this new sequel has been revealed so far, but gamers did know that Project Orion is being built in Unreal Engine 5 rather than the proprietary REDengine used to make Cyberpunk 2077. Mike Pondsmith, creator of the Cyberpunk tabletop gaming franchise, has also hinted that the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel will leave Night City in favor of a new setting that he describes as “Chicago gone wrong.”
Cyberpunk 2077's Sequel May Want to Take Notes from Mass Effect in One Area
Cyberpunk 2077’s sequel, Project Orion, has the opportunity to make the adventure in Night City more memorable by ‘stealing’ an idea from Mass Effect.
As reported by IGN, CD Projekt Red announced that Project Orion, now referred to as Cyberpunk 2, is officially entering pre-production as part of its latest financial report. According to CDPR, Cyberpunk 2’s conceptual phase wrapped up several weeks ago, and now the project is moving forward. For the uninitiated, the pre-production stage is where concepts are fully fleshed out, gameplay prototypes are built, and staff are allocated to the project in question. This still takes several years, so fans probably shouldn’t expect to see more of Cyberpunk 2 in action for the time being.
Cyberpunk 2 Enters Pre-Production
CDPR says that 96 members of its 730-person development staff are now working on Cyberpunk 2, with the rest presumably assigned to The Witcher 4 and other current CDPR projects. Aside from these two major games, CDPR has a remake of the original Witcher game, a multiplayer title set in the Witcher universe, and a brand-new IP in the works.
As such, it will likely be a long time before Cyberpunk 2 is released, but fans at least know the game’s official title and have a good idea of how far along it is in development. While the gaming world waits for more developments about Cyberpunk 2, the original Cyberpunk 2077 will soon be ported to the Nintendo Switch 2, and there is another Cyberpunk animated project in development at Netflix following the blockbuster success of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners back in 2022.
