CD Projekt Red hasn’t been coy at all about what its near-future plans look like regarding both The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077. Indeed, The Witcher 4 is currently in development alongside other Witcher franchise projects, while Cyberpunk 2077’s sequel is in pre-production and Cyberpunk 2077 itself awaits its next update, 2.3. This update has been loosely compared to 2.2 in terms of its scope and what CD Projekt Red hopes to achieve with it, requiring a delay from its previously scheduled release date of June 26 in order to ensure its quality. Otherwise, no details have been shared about what Cyberpunk 2077 2.3 might feature.
The amount of discourse and excitement surrounding Cyberpunk 2077 2.3 has the potential to be dashed if expectations are too high and the update doesn’t rise to meet them, however implausible or outlandish they may be. That said, with no knowledge of what 2.3 could deliver to an already packed experience, it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility that this update could come with a lot of new content. Either way, if CD Projekt Red wants to continue investing in Cyberpunk 2077 until the eventual release of its sequel, it would be terrific to see another dedicated DLC expansion follow 2.3 and hypothetical future updates.
Cyberpunk 2077 Patch Tier List
As Cyberpunk 2077's Patch 2.3 looms around the corner, this tier list ranks all major patches, from game-changing to those meant to put out fires.
The Hype for Cyberpunk 2077 2.3 is Palpable
Cyberpunk 2077 has rightfully grown into its clothing and, unlike at launch, is exceedingly well-received. This wasn’t an overnight success story by any means, though, as it took many patches bailing water out of a hole-riddled canoe to avenge it, and it arguably wasn’t until Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty DLC that the tide began turning for CD Projekt Red’s gritty sci-fi RPG.
Indeed, Phantom Liberty provided Cyberpunk 2077 with a rare opportunity to reinvent itself and is still widely considered to possess the game’s best content. It would seem as if no expansion like Phantom Liberty is in the works for Cyberpunk 2077; however, if the upcoming 2.3 update is any indication, there would probably be no better way to capitalize on everything CD Projekt Red might still have planned for Cyberpunk 2077 than by dedicating efforts toward another story-related DLC.
CD Projekt Red Should Milk Cyberpunk for All It’s Worth
Because The Witcher 4 is expected to be CD Projekt Red's next game, and it’ll probably be an unknown number of years before Cyberpunk 2077’s sequel—whether it’s intending to be titled Cyberpunk 2 or something else entirely—is heard from or about in an official or newsworthy capacity, it would make sense for CD Projekt Red to squeeze every available drop it can out of Cyberpunk 2077 while it’s enjoying exceptional popularity and success. Plus, a hypothetical subsequent expansion might not be completely inconceivable depending on how much more content CD Projekt Red wishes to add to the game via patches and updates.
If Cyberpunk 2 takes place beyond Night City, for instance, another DLC for the first game could allow it to continue developing and evolving the now-iconic setting.
Otherwise, a DLC with major gameplay overhauls may provide a template for how CD Projekt Red might be tackling the sequel regarding its own design, ensuring both games are congruent. Cyberpunk 2077 will almost assuredly receive new patches and updates, no matter how trivial, until its sequel arrives, and 2.3 will hopefully be the latest of many tenable excuses to return to Night City for the foreseeable future, at least until content inevitably arrives that crosses over with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’ second season, which was just recently confirmed to be in production.
