Spoilers ahead for Season 1 of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

Night City is the beating heart of Cyberpunk 2077, and Netflix's anime spin-off, Edgerunners, is getting a second season that will dive even deeper into the fascinating, crime-riddled metropolis. The world of Cyberpunk 2077 is cutthroat, and as its citizens work to rise through the ranks in an attempt to become Night City legends, life becomes even more challenging.

The dystopian nature of Cyberpunk 2077 and its corporate-overrun world makes it incredibly hard to find success, which drives many people to crime. This life of crime leads to living on the edge, which made way for the term "Edgerunner." It's an important slang term in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, and even more so in the anime spin-off series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. The first season of Edgerunners offered a fresh look into what life in Night City is like, and now that a second season has been confirmed, a fresh cast of characters will lead a new story. After the first season's main protagonist, David Martinez, met an unfortunate end, Edgerunners 2 could actually give him a second shot at life, but not in the way many may expect.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 Could Let David Martinez Live On as a Night City Legend

Gone, But Not Forgotten

The finale of Edgerunners' first season saw David face off against the notorious Adam Smasher. Considering Smasher's reputation, it wasn't surprising that David was unable to beat the cyber-enhanced mercenary, but it was still heartbreaking. He didn't get to go with Lucy to the Moon, but he was at least able to make her dream come true. It's an ending that truly showcases the brutality of Night City and the lengths that people are willing to go to attempt to change their lives.

As sad as David's death was, the feat he attempted by going against Adam Smasher is definitely enough to make him a Night City legend. There are plenty of Night City legends in Cyberpunk 2077's lore, and David would be a great addition to the roster. As of now, there isn't any solid information regarding what the next season of Edgerunners has in store, but even though it has been confirmed to be a standalone story, that doesn't mean the events of the first season will be completely forgotten.

Edgerunners 2's New Characters Can Help Keep David's Memory Alive

Edgerunners 2's new characters have yet to be named, but the season's teaser trailer and first promo image have given at least a small hint as to what should be expected. The teaser trailer shows a lineup of 11 silhouetted characters, while the promo image showcases 8, and at the center of both is what looks to be a young boy or girl with a camera.

Of course, there's no way to know for sure until officially confirmed by Netflix and Trigger, but if David has become a legend, his fight against Adam Smasher could have had a major impact on the young character, and the rest of the cast, too. There are already high expectations for Edgerunners 2, and letting David's memory live on in this way could be incredibly meaningful.

Edgerunners 2 will consist of 10 episodes.

Edgerunners 2 and Cyberpunk 2077's Sequel Both Have the Chance to Reference David

  • Edgerunners 2 does not have a premiere date yet.
  • Cyberpunk 2077's sequel recently entered pre-production.

While both projects are currently being worked on, it's definitely possible that David Martinez could be referenced in a variety of ways. The world of Cyberpunk 2077 is dense, and referencing the character may not be on the top of CD Projekt Red or Trigger's to-do list, but a small acknowledgment of David's accomplishments could be touching.
