The sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 is currently in development, and as anticipation continues to grow, there are plenty of questions arising about what lies in store for players. With the brand-new 2.3 update coming to Cyberpunk 2077 soon, fans of the dystopian sci-fi franchise have a lot to look forward to.
Even beyond the upcoming 2.3 update and in-development sequel, the second season of Netflix's anime spin-off, Edgerunners, has been confirmed. The first season launched back in 2022, which left many fans wondering if a second season would ever come to fruition. Thankfully, this year's Anime Expo made it official. The teaser trailer for Edgerunners 2 suggested a return to Night City, but the series also now has the perfect chance to introduce a specific location before Cyberpunk 2077's sequel gets the chance to: Chicago.

A Recent Mike Pondsmith Interview Held Some Fascinating Revelations
Cyberpunk franchise creator Mike Pondsmith attended the 2025 Digital Dragons conference in Poland, and he offered a few compelling details regarding the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel. When talking about a new city being developed for the follow-up, he stated "it feels more like Chicago gone wrong."
Potentially leaving Night City is a bold move, but it's not too surprising. Chicago has a compelling history within the franchise's lore, so getting a glimpse of the metropolis in the next Cyberpunk 2077 would be fascinating. Chicago is even referenced multiple times throughout the game, so CD Projekt Red could be planting seeds for a Chicago-based chapter to bloom. As exciting as the possibility of leaving Night City is, Edgerunners 2 may be the first story to jump at the opportunity.
In Cyberpunk lore, Chicago has been ravaged by plagues and was a major victim of the Fourth Corporate War after Arasaka dropped virus bombs on the city.
Edgerunners 2 is Shaking Up the Series With Fresh Faces
Since the second season was just announced this week, there is practically nothing known about Edgerunners 2 yet, let alone the setting. The story is likely to feature Night City, but there is still a chance that Chicago could be introduced in some way, even if just for a brief moment. Any sneak peek of a new city would be exciting, but only time will tell. Edgerunners 2 has already teased a fresh cast of characters, so one of them having ties to Chicago definitely isn't impossible.
If both Edgerunners 2 and Cyberpunk 2077's sequel feature Chicago, it could also be a great way to bring the show and the game together in some small, but meaningful way. As of now, the series and the game have been kept separate, but having at least a hint of story overlap could be incredibly exciting.
Trigger, the studio that made the first season, is returning for Edgerunners 2. The season will be a standalone story consisting of 10 episodes.

Cyberpunk 2077's Sequel Will Likely Remain Hidden for a Long Time
Back in May, it was revealed that Cyberpunk 2077's sequel has officially entered pre-production. With CD Projekt Red mainly focused on The Witcher 4 at the moment and the next Cyberpunk 2077 just now entering production, fans eager to see more of Night City, and possibly Chicago, may be waiting for a while. Edgerunners 2 is also likely further away than some would like, but it's likely to arrive before the next game. This could give the second season the perfect opportunity to lay some lore bread crumbs for fans who are patiently waiting for another dive into Cyberpunk 2077's world.
