The Cyberpunk 2077 world is expanding into a whole new medium, as it was announced that a live-action project is in the works.

Although Cyberpunk 2077 had a shaky launch, CD Projekt Red never gave up on it, and the game has been well-received DLC. There is even an anime that takes place in the Cyberpunk world. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners on Netflix was well received by fans and critics and won several major awards, including Anime of the Year from Crunchyroll.

CD Projekt Red has announced in a press release that they have partnered with Anonymous Content for a live-action Cyberpunk project. Anonymous Content has produced Emmy-winning series such as Mr. Robot and True Detective and Academy Award-winning films, including The Revenant and Spotlight. CD Projekt Red is searching for a screenwriter “to tell a brand-new story set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077.”

It was not mentioned in the press release whether the project will be a series or a film, as this is still in early development. However, CD Projekt Red did mention they were collaborating with Anonymous Content Studios' Head of Television Garret Kemble and others at the studio, including Chief Creative Officer David Levine, who was involved in early Game of Thrones seasons during his time at HBO. This makes it seem like the project will be a series, but they will probably wait to hear from screenwriters about their ideas before deciding whether the project will be a series or a film. It is also unknown if the project will end up on Netflix like Cyberpunk: Edgerunners or if it will go to a different streaming service.

There is currently a video game adaptation renaissance going on. Not too long ago were the days when every film based on video games flopped at the box office and was widely panned by fans and critics alike. However, this has changed recently, with The Last of Us being nominated for 24 Emmys and The Super Mario Bros. Movie grossing over $1.3 billion.

Not every recent video game adaptation has been a hit. Mortal Kombat (2021) was panned by critics and earned a lackluster box office of $83 million. Similarly, the Resident Evil series on Netflix improved on past adaptations but was still regarded as being mediocre. However, with the success of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and the quality of projects produced by Anonymous Content, fans have high hopes for a live-action Cyberpunk 2077 project.
