Players won’t be able to use mods in Cyberpunk 2077’s newly released Phantom Liberty DLC, as they are being disabled. The first and only major story expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 is now live, adding a brand new, crime-ridden location named Dogtown and a separate story campaign that sees V and Johnny Silverhand reluctantly join forces with FIA agent Solomon Reed to investigate an orbital shuttle crash in Night City’s most dangerous district.

It's been a long and tumultuous transition from the infamously glitch-filled state Cyberpunk 2077 first launched in to the more stable and playable version that is being expanded on, and players have created their own chaotic fun during the almost three-year wait for Phantom Liberty in the form of mods. These mods have run the gamut from fixing some of Cyberpunk 2077’s most problematic bugs to adding new features like a working Metro train system and Spider-Man-like grabbling hook mechanic. Unfortunately for fans of these mods, they may have to leave them behind while exploring Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty.

Shortly before Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty went live, CD Projekt Red announced that mods would be automatically disabled for the new expansion on its official Twitter account. According to the noted Cyberpunk 2077 developer, this is being done to prevent any technical issues brought on by the mods before they can be updated to account for both Phantom Liberty and the previous Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 update patch. While there have been some complaints about certain mods not being available, players have been understanding of this for the most part and are eagerly anticipating returning to Night City.

As mentioned before, fans have waited almost three years for Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, as CDPR spent much of that time fixing the many game-breaking bugs and glitches that plagued the base game. Once the worst of these issues were fixed and Cyberpunk 2077 was made available on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles, this focus shifted toward developing Phantom Liberty, which earned praise from early playtesters ahead of its launch and is being hailed as a promising conclusion to the once troubled RPG.

While players will be able to bring their fully-customized V into Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, any mods used to enhance the base game will have to remain disabled for the time being. Both the wording of CDPR’s announcement post and some comments from fans have suggested that this is only temporary though, and it likely won’t be long before modders find a way to bring their creations back for the fully-expanded Cyberpunk 2077 without causing any major technical issues.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is available for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X.
