- Some players speculate that the animated face indicates that the game was originally intended to be third-person or have third-person cutscenes.
An eagle-eyed player finally noticed an interesting new detail about Cyberpunk 2077 after playing for nearly 600 hours: V’s face is indeed animated while talking. The world of Cyberpunk 2077 is vast and detailed, with plenty of hidden secrets to uncover while roaming the untamed streets of Night City. Players have naturally come across many interesting but minor tidbits while playing CD Projekt Red’s futuristic first-person RPG, be it a scratched-out corporate logo on Johnny Silverhand's mechanical arm or a shared restaurant order between main character V and one of his many associates.
Last month’s massive Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty DLC added even more hidden details for fans to discover, such as a seemingly minor character having a familial link to last year’s Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and new supporting character Solomon Reed actually being present during the base game as an undercover bouncer. These little tidbits help make Night City feel like a living metropolis, and it seems that they can extend to Cyberpunk 2077’s user interface as well.
Cyberpunk 2077 Players Think They Spotted Solomon Reed Before Phantom Liberty
Solomon Reed is one of Phantom Liberty's main characters, but some players think the mysterious FIA agent can also be seen in the base Cyberpunk 2077.
Reddit user KamuiRil noticed such a detail after playing Cyberpunk 2077 for nearly 600 hours and recently shared their discovery on r/cyberpunkgame. Though most of V's experience in Cyberpunk 2077 is presented from a first-person perspective, players can switch to an over-the-shoulder view while driving a vehicle. KamuiRil found that if the player moves the camera while V talks to another character in this view, they can see that their face is fully animated throughout the conversation.
According to some of the Reddit users responding to KamuiRil’s post, this feature wasn’t included in the base Cyberpunk 2077 at launch and was apparently added in the 2.0 update patch that preceded Phantom Liberty. CD Projekt Red seemingly planned for V’s face to be animated while they are talking from the start, but ultimately cut it due to a glitch where V would instead mouth the words played on the radio. Some players note that this still isn't perfectly implemented in its current state and that they sometimes see V mouthing another character's dialogue.
Others theorize that V’s fully animated face is a sign that Cyberpunk 2077 was originally meant to be a third-person game, or at least have cutscenes from a third-person perspective. Instead, the finished Cyberpunk 2077 tells most of its story through the eyes of its main protagonist, although this could change for the game’s planned sequel. In the meantime, players can at least see their custom avatar speak while riding a vehicle through Night City’s rough streets.
Cyberpunk 2077 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
