Summary
- The Cyberpunk 2077 sequel may be set in a new city.
- It was stated that players will 'visit' another city, so the game may have multiple settings.
- Cyberpunk 2077 2 currently has no release window.
The in-development Cyberpunk 2077 sequel could be leaving the mean streets of Night City behind in favor of a brand-new setting. While the original Cyberpunk 2077 took some time to win gamers over, it eventually became a major success for CD Projekt Red, especially after the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime brought more attention to the game in 2022 and the Phantom Liberty story DLC was released back in 2023 . Now, CDPR is working on a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel under the codename “Project Orion,” which was announced in the fall of 2022.
So far, very little is known about Project Orion. Rumors have suggested that its official name could be Cyberpunk 2, and job listings have hinted at multiplayer being added to the mix. Cyberpunk 2’s plot and setting have also sparked ample speculation about whether the sequel will follow the story of V from Cyberpunk 2077 or feature a completely new protagonist - and if it decides to do the latter, which of the first game’s multiple endings will be made canon.
'Developers Should Not Underestimate This' Cyberpunk 2077 Dev Comments On Nintendo Switch 2 Key Card Controversy
Cyberpunk 2077 developer from CD Projekt shares their opinion on the controversial Nintendo Switch 2 key cards and the importance of physical media.
Mike Pondsmith, the creator of the Cyberpunk tabletop RPG franchise that Cyberpunk 2077 is based on, recently talked about the upcoming sequel at the 2025 Digital Dragons conference in Poland. According to GamePressure, Pondsmith said that players will visit “another city” in Project Orion, but quickly added that he couldn’t share any more details at this time.
Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel Could Introduce New City Setting
Interestingly enough, some in-game posters in the original Cyberpunk 2077 mention Chicago and how close it is to Night City, and this has naturally sparked rumors that Project Orion could take place in a future version of the real-life city. Other rumors have suggested that the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel could leave the planet Earth entirely, as a planned DLC for the first game would have taken V to a colony on the moon.
It should be pointed out that Pondsmith’s comments about Cyberpunk 2077's sequel only mentioned "visiting" a new city, so Project Orion might actually be set in multiple locations, including a return to Night City. It also seems like the comment slipped out accidentally, so fans shouldn't take it as fact just yet. There is currently no release window for Cyberpunk 2077’s sequel, and it is just one of many projects that CD Projekt Red has in the works. Other CDPR projects include The Witcher 4, a remake of the original Witcher game, a Witcher multiplayer title, and a project based on a brand-new IP.
