A Cyberpunk 2077 developer has commented on how the game's upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 version will compare to the earlier Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions. Cyberpunk 2077 was confirmed for the Switch 2 earlier this month, featuring as one of the platform's major third-party titles.
Upon its initial launch in 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 massively struggled on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The game was almost too ambitious for what last-generation consoles could achieve, resulting in numerous issues. This then led to various videos going viral online, showcasing how poorly Cyberpunk 2077 was performing on these platforms. CD Projekt Red continued to update the game on all platforms, but these early problems gave it a notorious reputation on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Naturally, fans don't want a repeat of these issues with the upcoming Switch 2 version.
The Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel May Want to Avoid the Obvious Multiplayer Route
There's a very good chance that Cyberpunk 2077's sequel will feature multiplayer, but it might be better off avoiding the obvious route.
Game File recently asked CD Projekt Red engineer Tim Green how the game's performance on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 version compares to the messy PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions. According to Green, "we haven't had to fight with fitting into memory. And the speed of the data storage has helped alleviate some of those early streaming problems." Texture pop-in was one of the most glaring issues with last-generation versions of Cyberpunk 2077, so it's good to hear that the studio has managed to avoid the worst of it on the Nintendo Switch 2.
Cyberpunk 2077 Switch 2 Version to Improve on PS4 and Xbox One Versions
Green also reconfirmed Cyberpunk 2077's performance targets on Switch 2, stating, "We are currently targeting 1080p resolution in TV quality mode, TV performance mode, and handheld quality mode - and targeting 720p performance in handheld performance mode," while mentioning that it also "still utilizes Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) when players take it on the go." This use of the popular upscaling technology will make playing Cyberpunk 2077 in handheld mode much more viable on the Nintendo Switch 2.
It's no secret that CD Projekt Red is also working on Cyberpunk 2077's sequel, currently code-named Project Orion. The studio is yet to reveal much about the upcoming title, although some Project Orion features have seemingly leaked via job listings in recent months. With the development of The Witcher 4 also ongoing at the studio, it's unlikely that players will know much about Project Orion until after its release.
