Summary

  • CD Projekt Red may be working on an Ultimate Edition of Cyberpunk 2077, according to a rating from Europe's rating board, PEGI.
  • The Ultimate Edition would likely include the base game and the Phantom Liberty expansion, providing a definitive collection for players.
  • Releasing a definitive edition so soon after the expansion may be viewed negatively by players, but it could be an opportunity for those who waited for patches to be released.

An Ultimate Edition of Cyberpunk 2077 could be in the works if a recently published rating from Europe's PEGI is to be believed. CD Projekt Red launched both its 2.0 update for Cyberpunk 2077 and its Phantom Liberty expansion recently, dramatically updating the first-person RPG. While no further major updates are planned, CD Projekt Red may still have some ideas for how to repackage Cyberpunk 2077 going into 2023's holiday season.

CD Projekt Red is no stranger to releasing final editions that collect the entirety of a game's released content – and often more. There are Enhanced Editions for both The Witcher and The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Complete Edition includes both of the game's two massive expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, plus plenty of extra DLC. They are undoubtedly definitive collections for each of CD Projekt Red's releases.

Cyberpunk 2077's definitive collection may be arriving surprisingly soon. A filing published by the European rating board PEGI was made public for Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition recently. The rating included notes for mature content, including violence, bad language, and sex. It also listed the Xbox Series X/S as a release platform, and put December 31, 2023, as its release date. It should be noted that the filing wouldn't mean it's not coming to other platforms like PC and PS5. The release date is likely also temporary.

As for whether a Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition makes sense, that's a question consumers would have to decide. An edition that combines both the Cyberpunk 2077 base game and its Phantom Liberty expansion does make sense. It also makes sense to create a definitive package if CD Projekt Red isn't planning to release any future content for Cyberpunk 2077. In those regards, a Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition makes perfect sense.

What's less certain is if it makes sense to release a Cyberpunk 2077 definitive edition so quickly after putting out the game's expansion. Phantom Liberty came out one week ago and remains full-priced at $29.99. Releasing an Ultimate Edition relatively soon, perhaps discounting the two products compared to their individual prices, may be looked at negatively by players.

Compared to Cyberpunk 2077's prior controversies, the quick release of a definitive edition is hardly worth mentioning. If anything, it'd be a great opportunity for those who waited for CD Projekt Red to patch Cyberpunk 2077. It'd encourage players not to pre-order, to ensure games are finished and functional when they do play. That's a healthy approach. Whether CD Projekt Red is genuinely working on a Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition is yet to be confirmed, though.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
