At Nintendo's E3 2018 press conference, the Japanese publisher Marvelous announced that it was developing a new game called Daemon X Machina, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch. Described as an accessible mech game with high-stakes combat, Daemon X Machina was marketed as a spiritual successor of sorts to FromSoftware's Armored Core series. In fact, a few of the people that worked on the franchise, including Armored Core producer Kenichiro Tsukuda, were involved in the game's development. Similar to Armored Core, Daemon X Machina featured fully customizable mechs and online PvP multiplayer. It did, however, have a distinctly vibrant color palette not seen in the likes of FromSoftware's long-running series.

Daemon x Machina was released on the Nintendo Switch in September 2019, in all territories around the world. Despite a lot of the excitement surrounding its debut, the game didn't exactly become a favorite among critics. On the review aggregator OpenCritic, Daemon X Machina received a measly 45% Critics Recommend rating and a 70/100 Top Critic Average. Much of the criticism of Daemon X Machina was directed towards the game's confusing story, unintuitive UI design, and repetitive missions. In spite of its mixed critical reception, however, Daemon X Machina apparently sold very well on the Switch; so much so, in fact, that a sequel to the game is already in development.

A Sequel to Daemon X Machina is Coming Out Later this Year

The Follow-Up to Daemon X Machina Looks Much More Ambitious than Its Predecessor

Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion, a direct follow-up to the original Daemon X Machina, was announced more than a year ago, but Marvelous did not provide any footage of its gameplay or confirm any targeted platforms at the time. However, during the recent Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, the game was finally unveiled in full. Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion's 1-minute-long announcement trailer seems to suggest that it will be a much more ambitious title than its predecessor. Instead of retaining the mission-based level design of the first game, it is going to feature a large, open-world environment. Players will be able to traverse the world on foot or fly in the skies using their trusty exosuits. They'll even have the ability to ride on horseback, which is quite surprising.

Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion is Being Released on All Current-Gen Platforms

After the Nintendo Direct took place, Marvelous revealed that Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion would not only be released on the Nintendo Switch 2, but on the PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows PC, as well. The game will come out on September 5, 2025, nearly 6 years after the debut of the original Daemon X Machina. Furthermore, it will cost $70 on all platforms, which is $10 more than the price of the first game.

Marvelous Should Have Ported the OG Daemon x Machina to PS5 and XSX Before The Launch of Its Sequel

Although it's great that Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion is being launched so soon, it's a bit disappointing that Marvelous hasn't announced PS5 and Xbox Series X/S ports of its predecessor beforehand. The original Daemon X Machina was released on Windows PC via Steam, GoG, and Epic Games Store in February 2020, just a few months after its debut on the Switch. It, however, was never brought to any PlayStation or Xbox consoles, in spite of the fact that it would have likely found an audience on those platforms.

Even though it came to PC, some have speculated that Nintendo paid Marvelous to ensure that Daemon X Machina would be a permanent Switch console exclusive. The game was, after all, published by Nintendo on the Switch. However, since there are many other former Nintendo-published titles that have made their way to other consoles, like Octopath Traveler and Shin Megami Tensei V, this doesn't seem that likely. Whatever the case may be, the fact that Marvelous didn't port Daemon X Machina to all current-gen consoles prior to the release of its sequel seems like a huge missed opportunity, as it could have led to increased sales for Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion on PlayStation and Xbox.
