Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair is making a comeback on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 in 2026, this time with a new version called Danganronpa 2x2. Featuring the classic whodunnit Class Trial appeal and killing game mechanics of the original 2012 release of the Danganronpa game, this version has plenty more in store for returning fans, including an entirely new alternate story.
Games in the Danganronpa series follow groups of elites called Ultimates, teenagers with superior specialized skills, who are pitted against each other in a Killing Game to escape captivity. Characters can escape by killing one another, but they have to get away with the crime via a Class Trial or face an elaborate execution carried out by a sadistic teddy bear-like being named Monokuma.
A New Danganronpa Story is Coming to Switch and Switch 2 in 2026
The release of Danganronpa 2 traded in the dreary Hope's Peak Academy setting for a tropical island, providing a stark juxtaposition of summertime fun and the looming threat of grisly murder. The reveal of a new trailer during the September 2025 Nintendo Direct livestream confirms that players will be returning to Jabberwock Island sometime next year to participate in its Killing Game. However, an original story has been included in addition to the main game. In this alternate version, the victims and killers will be switched up, providing players with a completely alternate take and a new set of Class Trials to undergo in the hopes of identifying the murderers.
Fans should expect to participate in familiar scenarios like Class Trials in both the original story and its new, alternate counterpart, along with building relationships with their fellow Ultimates. One thing that's not evident from the trailer is if Danganronpa 2x2 will include the special dating sim-like post-game afterstory that was included in the original, which lends some extra utility to Danganronpa 2's gift-giving system.
Danganronpa is easily one of Spike Chunsoft's most popular series, but its entries aren't the only games for which the developer has become well-known. Prior to its merger with Spike in 2012, Chunsoft was responsible for the origins of the Dragon Quest RPG franchise, and the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games bear both Spike and Spike Chunsoft branding. While the last new Danganronpa game, Danganronpa S: Ultimate Summer Camp, was released in 2021, 2023's Master Detective Archives: Rain Code had several elements similar to Danganronpa, serving as a sort of spiritual successor.
